I just joined a company. They are currently using a 2003 domain controller, one 2012 file server, and a 2008 server.
I need to do a total upgrade. I don't want to keep the 2003 domain functional level. How best can I upgrade their domain controller to server 2012 or 2016?
Do I just dis-join all current users from the 2003 domain and do a fresh installation of server 2012 or 2016 and make it the domain controller. Then add all 20 users back to the domain?
Please I need your advise.

We have setup a DMZ setup by a 3rd party that has 2 servers (3rd Party is no longer available for assistance). One is the Web Application Gateway (Non-Domain) and the Remote Desktop Gateway (Domain Joined).
On the WAP server we have some port 80/443 rules on our FW that allows some internal sites to be published externally (e.g. helpdesk, ADFS, ECP) and we would like to look at having some published app's available to staff via an external RDWeb page.
Currently the RDG server cannot access much across and the domain join isn't working (was domain joined on a different VLAN and then moved).
The questions I have are:
1. Should the RDG server be able to access the domain controllers. If so, what ports should I allow?
2. How do I securely access the Connection broker/app servers from the RDG machine.

Loving my Dell T20 server, but hit a wall. Recently installed Windows Server 2016 and looking to setup Hyper-V to enable Docker support of Linux apps.
Server: T20, Xeon CPU-E3-1225 v3 @ 3.20GHz
Memory: 24GB
Some actions completed before trying Hyper-V install: Havbe set up active-directoy/domain. I've updated all my drivers + the BIOS. BIOS has virtualisation enabled.
I try to install hyper-V through the server manager. Installs OK, but then fails on the first reboot, with the error "we couldn't complete the features" during the windows boot and then mentions "Hyper-V" service superficially, stops the service and then removes the service. Can boot back into the server after 2 restarts, but hyper-V not available.

Location 1 has DC, Exchange, network drives and users data.
Location 2 is slow accessing said data.
Location 2 does have 2nd server running vm replication of Location 1 VMs
whats the best way to speed up location 2? create vm with data and replicate between dfs between sites?
Hello Everyone, I am a recent system admin. We have a server that was an old file server that got promoted to our main domain controller. Well it is barely holding on by a thread. The snap ins are not loading. AD takes forever to load up , search and make changes. I came from a much more structured environment so I am a bit over my head. My boss fired up an old Exchange server so that is syncing somehow to the DC. So we make changes in AD from the old Exchange server and then upload that to Azure AD. We have a hybrid system. Something I am very new to as we had everything on prem at my last job. Also we used VM ware which I became comfortable with. Now we are using Hyper-V and 3 servers running 2008r2. We have another server that is kind of our backup DNS server. So my plan is to maybe find an old server laying around and get it...
We're using WDS/MDT to image Dell workstations. It has been working fine until we started working with Optiplex 7060's.
When working with Optiplex 7060's, when I attempt to map a network drive to the deployment share in WinPE, it fails either with error 1231 or error 67.
The exact errors are "System Error 1231 has occurred" or "System error 67 has occurred. The network name cannot be found". I'm mapping by IP address, NOT name.
I can't ping out at all (not the server or the gateway) but can ping loopback. If I ping the gateway for example I get "Ping: transmit failed. General failure". If I just type ipconfig, it just says "windows ip configuration" but doesn't show an ip, subnet mask, gateway, etc...
If I do the same process with an older system, it works fine.
Any ideas?

I have a Windows 2016 STD VM (Vmware) that is giving me a BSOD on booting - Critical Process died.
This is a new install of a DC to replace an old SBS server (Now dead)
I installed the oS, Updated everything, installed all my needed roles, promoted to DC , removed the FSMO roles from the old one and retired it. All was working well for about a week, and suddenly i get a call from the client claiming that they were not getting DHCP or DNS services.
I have tried the following:
DISM /image:C:\ /cleanup-image /scanhealth
DISM /image:C:\ /cleanup-image /checkhealth
DISM /image:C:\ /cleanup-image /restorehealth
SFC /scannow
Nothing works. The server will not even boot into safe mode, directory services restore mode or any other mode.
The partition layout is GPT
Any ideas on how i can at least get the AD data up and running on another...
I have been working on an issue for a small environment where we have 4 virtual servers running on VMware 6.5. We recently had to change our print drivers for a HP LaserJet Pro M402 from a Type3 version to Type 4 to be able to print forms properly from a SAP application. I made this change on a server setup as the network Print Server. The updated Type 4 drivers rolled out to all computers and servers without any issues. The only exception is a single Windows 2016 Server that is being used as a Remote Desktop Server (Terminal Server). I can install the HP Type 3 driver, but not the Type 4 driver.
Every attempt to install using the Add Printer Driver Wizard nets the following response.
Unable to install HP LaserJet Pro M402-M403 PCL-6, Type 4 - UserMode, x64 driver. Element not found.

From what I read on the blog one Windows server is used for both AD and CA with vCenter server software installed on it, this is my 1st issue.
Second, I tried the above all on 1 server but cannot make it work, reasons, I cannot install vCenter on a server that is a DC (error frm vCenter), so I use 2 servers, one with AD and the second one with CA and vCenter, if I do this then I cannot apply the GPO method mentioned on the blog because GPO requires a DC, this does not work.

I have Built a 2016 WDS server to capture Win10 images. yet when I reach the stage to capture I put the server name or IP, a Command black windows come up asking for Admin credentials which put yet it doesn't allow me to process. i have tried my domain \ server name, different Admin usernames nothing worked
Please help as I have tried all possibilities as well as updating to the driver and uploading the drivers' package to the capture image boot

It doesn't appear anywhere in the search box for installed updates, but running the downloaded manual installer keeps failing, telling me that it IS actually installed. Has anyone seen this before?

I'm not a frequent poster here, but I've run into something I am hoping you may be able to help me out with. I believe this is a security setting and not a service issue. Here are the details:
1. Hyper-V manager will only connect to our hypervisor (server 2012 R2) from a single machine (Server 2012).
2. Any other client (on the domain) that attempts to connect to the hypervisor using hyper-v manager receives an error message:
"Hyper-V encountered an error trying to access an object on computer 'host1' because the object was not found. The object might have been deleted. verify that the virtual machine management serve on the computer is running"
3. VMMS is running on the server and, nothing has been deleted. As long as I connect using the single machine that works everything is fine.

Newbie to SCOM, could do with a little help if possible.
My department is now tasked with looking after a second company's IT infrastructure. The domain is completely seperate to ours with no VPN tunnels and no trust relationships and it will stay like this for the foreseeable. We could do with something to monitor this companies servers and was looking at SCOM. I have just installed a 2019 tester on our system as we are looking to implement it here and wandered if it was possible, without adding any gateway servers or any servers at all at the other company, to connect the servers at the new company to our SCOM server?
As I said, complete newbie to SCOM and could do with any advice you can spare.

So we have a KMS server that has been working for our site for about 1-1/12 years now. I'm now getting errors on one W10 Enterprise client not activating and a Windows Server 2016 DC not activating. The KMS server is on 2012 R2. I added the 2016 KMS host key successfully. I ended up activating the W10 ENT on a MAK key to get it deployed to the user, but the Server I'd really like to get up and running.
The problem I've gotten it narrowed down to is the client not finding the DNS record for some reason. On the 2016 server when I run the command- nslookup -type=srv _vlmcs._tcp it doesn't find the SRV record. I am running multiples IIS websites and I noticed the logs are getting larger in size from less than 200 MB to 2-3 GB daily.
the settings has always been w3c format, log file only, daily
I am not sure of what caused the logs to significantly increase
any suggestions?

With Windows Server 2016 Essentials, I am licensed up to 25 users. I can use the feature Anywhere Access for remote access without needing to buy RDS CALs.
On Windows Server 2016 Standard, if I install Essentials Experience role and setup Anywhere Access (it works), do I need RDS CALs to be compliant or I'm good since I'm using the Essentials Experience?

Just wondering if there's a way to make it so Windows will automatically have the correct RAID driver should it boot into it's recovery mode.
Have an issue where anytime the server goes into recovery, the raid driver needs to be loaded via drvload at command prompt before the disks are visible.
Even though, the recovery mode it's loading is part of a Windows installation located on one of those drives!
I've tested the drives for good measure which passed tests.
Any assistance appreciated.

Our security scan results came back saying that one of our 2016 servers has SSL - Server Accepts Weak Diffie-Hellman Keys. I tried creating a .reg file to enforce 2048-bit Diffie-Hellman and restarted the server but the vulnerability still comes up in the scans. What I find strange is that I've been reading 2048-bit is the standard for 2016 so why would it be coming up on the scans saying it's running 1024?
