Add New DC to AD Sites and Services

So I have a new domain controller I want to add to an existing site to have replication working. The existing site had a domain controller is gone due to unforeseen circumstances, but it still appears in Sites and Services as expected.

When I expand the site and right click on Server and point to New -> Server I get an error

Windows cannot create the object SITEDC because:

An attempt was made to add an object to the directory with a name that is already in use.

I checked the other sites and this server doesn't appear there. I'm not a pro in this space so maybe I'm doing something wrong to get this server added for replication.

Performing a Forest Restore in Case of Forest Function Level Upgrade Failure

$

Hello All,

We have a small business client that is currently looking to finally upgrade their infrastructure. Part of this process will include upgrading their existing functional forest level from server 2000 NT to server 2003, in order to create a trust with a newer domain that we are building for them. The newer domain will have servers that are only server 2008 and newer (eventually only server 2012 or newer) and will be disconnected from the old domain once all migration occurs. We have a plan in place to complete this properly, but there is one piece of the puzzle that I have yet to truly figure out.

The process to raise a Forest/Domain functional level is beyond easy, but I have not yet hammered down the process of performing a Forest/Domain Restore. I realize that a restore is literally the only way to recover from a forest...

If you were new into IT, which cert would you complete first?

If your company was to offer to pay for 1 of your certifications or tests -- which would you complete or ask for them to pay for first? Which would hold the most value for your resume?

Users home drive not mapping intermittently

$

Hi,

We have a strange situation where upon logging in sometimes users don't have their home drive mapped, looking in the event logs there's a warning from Group Policy Drive Maps that the "Group Policy Object did not apply because it failed with error code '0x80070035 The network path was not found.'"

There's also warnings in the eventlogs for Folder Redirection "The following error occurred: "Can't create folder "\\fileserver\User$\admin\username\Documents"". Error details: "Access is denied.".

If I log the user out, restart the computer and they log back in they get the home drive. Also there are 2 other mapped network drives that are always there and map fine.

I know it points to a permissions problem but surely if that was the case they'd never get the home drive?

Any suggestions are much appreciated as this is driving me crazy!

WS 2016 disaster recovery, migration to WS2019

Hi there! Let me first of all point out that I am very much fresh when it comes to networking so if some of the below is utter rubbish, please accept my apologies :)

In the office we have one WS2016 server being in charge of the whole domain - DC, FSMO, DHCP, DNS, AD, SQL database - all there. Builders came for some renovation work, and drilled through a power cable which made the power go out in the whole building. UPS didn't kick in properly, oh happy days. Once I managed to bring the server up, DNS never came back to life. I tried plenty of different things to bring DNS back up, nothing worked. I decided to recover the server from a backup (created with Veeam), then I went through DC authoritative restoreas stated in this article. This didn't really work as after recovery DNS, sysvol, netlogon, dhcp started spamming my event log. I...

need to remove a second DC from small domain

Hi All,

I have a small 6 server domain at server 2008 level with P8 as the primary domain controller. For a number of important reasons I added a second DC to the domain as backup P7, this became a big headache for me. The need for the backup is gone and that backup P7 is going to be decomissioned. I will run DCPromo to demote it then decomission P7. My question is after I dcpromo P7 will P8 take back all functions or will I have to seize all roles then manually clean out all remnants of P7 from AD.

I think I know the answer but just asking all of you that may have done this before. Thank you in advance

Alternate tool to configure Windows Server DHCP

I am cleaning up our DHCP reservervations and am getting very frustrated with Windows Server DHCP MMC snapin. I have to use Windows Server as part of my organization's policy (I don't have a problem with this) but the MMC snapin for DHCP is really bad. You can't sort reservations in the tree (you can sort in the panel, but that's worthless as you can't open the properties from there). It crashes a lot. You can save a reservation for it to just immediately say it is invalid.

I know this is a moonshot question, but are there alternative UIs to DHCP MMC? I am not looking for a different DHCP server product. I know there is powershell, but that's not the easiest thing to work with if I want to get a visual look at stuff.

Installing an app from Remote Descktop Services to multiple machines

I have encountered a issue where im unsure how to work around. Im not even sure if its possible to do what I intend to do.

Long story short, theres 15 RDP client computers outside of the network/building, basically, I have a Windows Server 2016 machine that used as a Remote Desktop services server so that external computers can connect to it and create a session on the Server. The issue im having is deploying/installing an application from the Windows Server to the RDP clients so each RDP client has their own instance of the software.

Is this even possible with RDS? I looked on google but could not find any advice on how this can be done, im aware of the "rdweb" to launch a virtualized instance of a app but its not exactly what im looking for.

Hello,

I currently have 1 Front end enterprise, 1 edge, and 1 2008r2 sp3 sql backend. I would like to move our sql backend to sql2016. Based on all my reading, I've outline all the steps that I will preform but would like experts to confirm if they are correct.

Servers:
FE01SVR – Current Front End Server
FE02TEMPSVR – Temporary Front End Server
2008SQLSVR – Current Production Sql 2008r2 Server
2016SQLSVR – New Sql 2016 Server

1) On FE01SVR, Run Export-csconfiguration -filename c:\backup\csconfiguration.zip
Run Export-cslisconfigurtion -filename c:\backup\cslisconfiguration.zip

2) Install skype for buisness server 2015 on a new server (FE02TEMPSVR). Install the local configuration store.

3) On the FE02TEMPSVR, run Install-CsDatabase -CentralManagementDatabase -SQLServerFQDN 2008SQLSVR -SQLInstanceName RTC

Windows Server 2016 DHCP reservation not working

$

I have a virtual lab of Windows Server 2016.  I have set the network adapters statically for the servers.  However, I created a reservation of 192.168.57.11 for a Windows 11 client.  I had to allow the handing out of DHCP requests from 192.168.57.1 - 192.168.57.30.  I also have an exclusion range of 192.168.57.1 - 192.168.57.10.

My DHCP server automatically gets the IP address of 192.168.57.2 and the Windows 10 client gets 192.168.57.3.  Even though the exclusion address range is set, why would it be handing out those addresses in that fashion?

Windows Server 2012 R2 Indexing Issue on File Server

Hey guys,

I've got an issue. My windows server 2012 R2 indexing is completely busted. Basically it shows the files, but not their locations or where to open them. Attached is an image of this:

When I open indexing, it does not show the folders. When I rebuild it, it shows them for a bit but then they disappear. This happened even after manually removing the service and rebuilding the index:

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the indexing service and rebuilding the index and deleting the index folder and changing the index folder location. None of which solve the problem.

Please Help!

I need help figuring out how to get data off of a failed Windows server 2008 R2

HP Proliant DL180 G6 Server
Windows server 2008 R2
Rack server with 2 RAID controllers (212 and 402 or something like that)

The server has been slowly deteriorating over the last 6 months. It was the DC/AD/DHCP/DNS, etc... We were able to get FSMO and all roles transferred to another DC. We thought that we got all of the data off of it, but turns out there is still data on there that we didn't get.

Now the server just won't boot. This has progressed from bad to worse over the last couple of weeks. I've tried to work through the different reasons for it not booting only to come across another reason. And now I just can't get it booted, repaired (booted from a server 2008 R2 disk), I just can't get into it no matter what I try.

As best that I can tell the server was installed in JUN of 2011. Pre-dates me so I didn't install the server. And...

Help Moving from Server 2016 to Server 2019

Hi all,

I've decided to upgrade my home server from Server 2016 to Server 2019, but also change my windows drive to a seperate bigger size (replacement).

I've installed the OS fine, added my Hyper-V machine and it's detected both of my virtual harddisks.

However, one is just a Windows 10 test machine and the other is my Windows 10 Plex Server. However when I start up my Windows 10 test machine, it loads up fine, but when I start my Plex Server it gives me an error stating the server Account access denied. I've tried using powershell to grant permission for the VMID to that virtual hard drive which said success but when I started it back up, again I got the same error.

It's not the end of the world at the moment as I still have the original drive which has it all on, so I can plug back in and continue as usual (but will be Server 2016 and...

Please someone help My dc2 inot working after I shutdown DC1.

I have DC1 and DC2 as my additional domain controller. all I want is to check that DC2 can work if there is a disaster. here is what I have done; I have successfully transferred all the roles from DC1 to DC2 and I can see that using netdom fsmo query it will show that DC2 has all the roles.

DC1: ip 192.168.1.4 , dns1: 192.168.1.5 (which is the ip for dc2), dns 2: 192.168.1.4

DC2: ip 192.168.1.5 , dns1: 192.168.1.4 (which is the ip for dc1), dns 2: 192.168.1.5

I also replicated. repadmin /showrep when you see the result of this it shows no error and I can the replication is good.

Here is what is happening: before I shutdown DC1 everything is working, but when I shutdown DC1 , DC2 is no longer working.

At this time DNS is working in DC2, but Active directory users and computers are...

Best Practices for replacement of single Server 2008 DC keeping name and IP.

$

Good Afternoon,

Small dental office, single server with 25 or so workstations and a handful of printers, etc. Currently running Server 2008. The current physical server runs AD, DNS, DHCP, Print Server, File Server as well as the application Eaglesoft which is the EMR.

I have new hardware in place which will run ESXIand will run a new installation of Server 2019 to replace the old physical server.

Ideally, I'd like to maintain the server name and IP address for the new Server 2019 installation.

Is my best bet to stand up a temporary DC, demote the old server to just a member server and rename it to "oldserver" and change it's IP. At this point I would create the VM which would act as it's replacement and standard that up with the original name and IP. Then get all the data moved over and then eventually remove the temporary domain...
