Can't Activate Server 2019 Via AD

Hi All,

I am trying to activate a new server 2019 install and I use active directory volume activation but it won't activate. When I run slmgr /ato it says something about DNS not found which seems to be if you are using a KMS server, so then I ran slmgr /act-type 1 to set it to AD, then I ran slmgr /ato and now I get error 0xc004f081 which doesn't tell you anything.  I can see the activation object via adsiedit so I know it is there.

Anyone have any thoughts on what to try?

Stretch Clustering Bandwidth Inquiry and Your Experiences

I'm new to server clustering, let alone stretch clustering. But, this is something that I'm diving head first into. So, here's the scenario:

2 "HQ" sites with 1 DR Site. All 3 sites are in physically different locations and will utilize a Fiber Internet Access and VPN to connect to each other (Utilizing CIsco-Meraki devices for the VPN and Traffic Management). The idea is that these 3 sites will each have a physical server located at them. The servers will be clustered together (originally configured at the same location for ease and speed of replication). The servers will be configured to run 2 Hyper-V Terminal servers, DHCP, DNS, and shared drives. So far, the HPE Rep, Microsoft Rep, Cisco Rep, and Meraki Reps all agree that this should work. In total, there will be about 70 users connecting via ThinClients, which I imagine will be...

Can't remote into Windows Server 2016 after changing RDP port.

Hi all. I'm setting up a dedicated server for a web service. I obviously don't want RDP to be enabled on the default port, so I changed it. After this, I can't remote in. It doesn't appear to be a firewall issue, I've made the rule and the problem persists when I temporarily disable the firewall anyway.

Changing it back to 3389 immediately allows me to connect again.

I can log into the secured VNC console for the server, and if I try to connect to localhost using the new port from there, it does establish a connection. It's almost as if it's not binding to the external IP when I change the port, but I don't understand why that would happen.

Has anybody ever run into this before?

Transfer or seize FSMO roles

I have a domain controller that suffered a USN rollback due to some virtualization mishap. The server that had the rollback is the FSMO Master. I know that it is normally best to transfer roles but in this situation I am not sure. Under the circumstances of a USN rollback is it best to transfer the roles or seize them from another domain controller?

Thanks!

Windows Server Licensing

Can someone please help me understand what I need to purchase?

I have 3 physical servers with 4-core Intel Xeon processors in each, I need to put Windows Server 2016 on them. How many licenses do I purchase?

I have a team of users assigned computers which use Active Directory for authentication and to push settings. How many CALs do I purchase? When we hire a new employee do I need to purchase a new CAL?

Thanks, I don't know why I can't understand their licensing scheme.

Permissions modifications

Hello all,

We have a shared folder which is sortof a common area for all users. The idea is that everybody should have read access to everything, but only document/folder owners should have read/write. Simple enough, with the exception that somewhere along the way, some of the permissions/owners got a bit messed up, and I somehow need to sort that out. So structure is as follow:

Text
share user1 folder1 folder2 user2 folder1 user3 folder1 folder2 etc...

So in this example, user1 should own that folder, along with all the subfolders and documents. Same with user2 and 3 and so on... I have hundreds of folders and probably thousands of files that need to be potentially fixed.

The way I see this, I cannot set the permissions until I fix the ownership. What I know is that the userX folder level has the right owners. It's the subfolders and...

Can't save email attachments to read/write-only location

We have created a shared folder on a de-duplicated drive. It is supposed to be an archive for documents like purchase orders, sales orders, etc. that we want to keep for several years. This has become necessary since trying to make the process paperless - we need a location where users can save files so they are not in danger of being deleted or modified.

Now, I created the share and added it to our DFS namespace with read/write access for select users (no modify perms). The users can access the share just fine, however when they attempt to add a document to that location by either opening the attachment and using save-as from the program, or right-clicking the attachment in the email and clicking save-as, the file is created with a size of 0KB and then they are served an error message saying that the document cannot be modified...

SCCM and SCCM DPM

So I am new to SCCM, and I am installing it and deploying it where I work. I have some questions about the DPM addition to SCCM and wanted to know if I would need to stand up a separate server or redo my current install of SCCM since I am also using the endpoint protection piece at the moment and hope to use the image/software deployment part of SCCM.

How to fix 0xc004fd03 error when licensing VM's on windwos 2016?

We have purchased a new Dell server.  Our physical host has windows 2016 standard installed with the hyper-V role only running 8 cores.  We have installed two windows 2016 standard VM guests to this server.  Neither of the VM's are getting licensed for some reason.  Both give the error in the description. Do they pull the license from the server or is there a separate key I have to use.  When trying the 'slmgr /dlv command it comes back as windows is not licensed.  I know each windows 2016 server license gives two free VM's as long as the physical only uses the hyper-v role so what am I missing?

Thanks in advanced

"The specified network name is no longer available" on domain join attempt

Hey guys, so unlike so many of the issues I've read on this subject my 2012 R2 test server CAN join the domain without issue from my standard corporate server network. The issue comes when I try to do this from my newly created DMZ on my Palo Alto 820. Pinging works fine to either DC by IP but I can only resolve by DNS name if I specify hostname.domain.com. I can also ping by DNS if I setup a DHCP pool and set the Option 15 for DNS Domain Name to domain.com - I normally do not have to do this with any of my other networks. Palo Alto support says there's nothing wrong with my config. I mention the DNS issues because I think whatever is causing DNS not to work properly is also causing my "specified network name is no longer available" error when I attempt to join a server to the domain from this network.

I'm hesitant to make any changes...

DNS Server Initial Replication

Hello,

The past two weeks I have been attempting to migrate my domain from WS 2012 to WS Essentials 2016.

All seemed to be going well with the domain migration, and I was able to transfer all the FSMO roles. Then I noticed the DNS server won't start due to the following error.

"The DNS server is waiting for Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) to signal that the initial synchronization of the directory has been completed. The DNS server service cannot start until the initial synchronization is complete because critical DNS data might not yet be replicated onto this domain controller. If events in the AD DS event log indicate that there is a problem with DNS name resolution, consider adding the IP address of another DNS server for this domain to the DNS server list in the Internet Protocol properties of this computer. This event will...

Windows Server Core - command shell

Does anyone know how to change the initial path of the command shell that is provided upon login to a windows core server? So for instance, instead of C:\Users\ it would automatically change to D:\ where D:\ is a share on a file server. I keep thinking there's a start.cmd somewhere. Anyone done this successfully?

we have 2 websites running iis and we are experiencing an issue with caching and the only way to fix it is to recycle the app pool from both servers in a staggered way.

how can this be automated without making both servers recycle at the same time. what will be the best option to resolve this issue without causing any risks for sites not to be available

Any idea's out there?

Windows Server File System Permissions Driving Me Crazy

$

I'm not sure what I did wrong, but would appreciate some guidance. Was this a glitch with Server 2008R2, or am I doing something incorrectly? Was I correct to break inheritable permissions?

I am converting our file system to use Security Groups, rather than individually assigned employee permissions. The security group creation went well. The security group permission assignments to the folders went well. All was working well, but I realized that one subfolder, within an inherited folder structure required stricter permissions.

I needed to allow add a security group to that subfolder to as the only group able to modify the folder content. But the folder had inherited permissions from the parent folder allowing modify permission. Considering that both security groups had some of the same members, I knew that adding a block permission to...

FTPeS stopped working for external FTP (IIS7) this morning

$

I have an IIS7 server hosting FTPeS that has been chugging along fine for about a year now. As of this morning I was informed external users couldn't log into it anymore.

Turns out, they can if they revert back to unencrypted FTP, but not FTPeS. No firewall changes, nor patches in about a week. Nothing in the logs that seem to help.

The head-scratcher is, if I use Telnet to connect from inside and issue AUTH TLS, I get 234 AUTH command ok. But, from outside, I get 504 Command not implemented.

Anybody know if this error is conditional on anything? I don't know the underlying mechanisms for FTPeS so not sure if IIS is testing the communications and determining that it can't do SSL with the client, or if it's doing this based on the route or something else.

Until I saw this, I figured it was a firewall issue (it almost always NAT with FTP,)...

Server 2FA broken, no one can login to server

$

We're using FortiAuthenticator for our IT teams to access all severs using 2FA with the Forti mobile app.

The login component has now broken, when domain admins try and login they get the error "ProcessLoginForUser failed, but a specific error message was not provided".

I've got a ticket open with FortiNet and they have said the solution is to update the agent on the servers. This does work and I've been slowly rolling this out across affected servers.

The problem is to install this I need to login as the local administrator but our company doesn't have the local administrator credentials for a handful of servers so I can't login to fix the issue.

Is there any way I can gain access to the local administrator account or create a new one, without taking the server offline/using the Windows recovery method? There are a few business-critical...
