Getting the latest version number of Windows Defender virus definition

Hi,

I'd like to be able to update Win Defender virus definition without using WSUS. My team are considering using a solution like PDQ. I'd like to also use the Microsoft API (along with Powershell). I could use the invoke-webrequest cmdlet but I'd like to avoid non updated info issues. Any suggestions?

thx

Hi there,

Hi,

Using Server 2012 R2 Remote Web Access, been running for a couple of years with no problems. Today users reported issues accessing the website. I understand the error message but the problem is that *.remotewebaccess.com is owned by Microsoft so I don't have any control over certs for the domain. I've tried a repair on "anywhere access" within the Essentials dashboard but still the same issue. Also tried a reboot but no joy there either.

Would be grateful for any suggestions

Thank you!

I am very familiar with windows 2008r2 RDP and setting it up I have not done this in 2012 or 2016

I am testing 2019 for a client the software vendor for there proprietary software says it should be ready to go in a few months.

How do you setup RDP in 2019?

If anyone has done it does it work the same as 2008r2 rdp?

Any how to's or video greatly appreciated.

Windows Server 2012 Core Locking up

The last couple of days we've had a client Core Server (and DC) pegging at 100% CPU usage. The culprits are 7-Zip GUI (multiple instances) and the Windows Update Standalone Installer (multiple instances actually referred to as "ikdate" and "ikstaller")

This is a Core server and 7-ZIP is not installed, also not sure why the standalone installer is spelled wrong and running multiple instances daily as well.

Enabling LDAPs on Windows Server 2012 for Mimecast

Hi all,

Looking to switch from LDAP to LDAPs on our 2012DC for comms with Mimecast servers. I have read that this can be done by installing a certificate but not sure on the process. Best article I have found so far is here

https://www.petri.com/enable-secure-ldap-windows-server-2008-2012-dc-configuration

Does anyone have any further advice as I am not conscious not to break anything on the DC. In the article it talks about multiple certs but then the link for that goes nowhere. Thanks again.

Intermittent Issues With Mapped Network Drive Disconnecting

We have been having a trouble recently that has been coming up often. Users are getting disconnected from a shared network drive with the error:

"(Folder name) is not accessible

The network location cannot be reached....."

Usually the user either has to sign out then back in, or reboot their computer, and sometimes the only thing that works is re-mapping the entire drive.

It's tough to isolate this because it does not happen with all people, just randomly to random people. It doesn't seem like a permission issue because I can re-map it and access is restored. It doesn't seem like a network issue because I have verified the user has a network connection and can ping the server that hosts the drive from the users computer and the fact that I don't see the red "X" on the drive, it just gives that error when trying to access it.

User AD Account keeps locking

Hello all,

Running out of places to look here. Back story - we had to change the username of someone's account, but ever since that day her account has been locking at random times throughout the day. Sometimes it was locked when she would come in, sometimes it would do it throughout the morning, it will always lock around noon and then several other times consistently throughout the afternoon.

I've used Powershell and the domain controllers event logs to determine the lockout is definitely coming from her computer (she's not signed in or signing in anywhere else), she has nothing in startup folders, no logon/logoff scripts, nothing in local group policy or task scheduler. We've changed her password and made new shortcuts to all of the server folders she had access to. She is still locked out and I can keep track of all the bad password...

I have the System Center Endpoint Protection client installed on all my servers. They're independent installs, not managed by System Center. I logged on to a server and got the following popup message. I then checked other server and they're ALL showing this.

Event Viewer shows these events:

Web searches just say to start it, so I didthey appeared to be fine but then I ran a quick scan and it crashed again.

Anyone have any ideas? It's client version 4.10 which is the latest one and they are All Windows Server 2012 R2.

For several reasons, I'm in the process of attempting to rebuild our secondary domain controller. I've demoted the server taken care of the issues it had and would like to re-promote it as our secondary controller. Should it first be removed from the DNS and Domain controller OU on the primary DC server before placing it back on the domain in it's the previous role? BTW running Server 2012 R2.Thanks for any help that can be provided.

Suggestion on how to copy 4TB and only during specific hours?

Hi,
I have to copy about 4TB of data from one Windows 2008R2 server to 2012R2. I need to keep file/folder permissions in place and I can only run this during certain hours of the day and it has to run daily until the copy is done. I can run it from 5am until 3pm. Then I need it to stop and resume where it left off until the next day. I looked at robocopy but I’m not sure how to get the right settings to do this. Once the initial copy completes I’ll hace to run this to pickup any changes from the source to copy to the destination daily for a couple of weeks as well.

Can anyone give me some suggestions? I can’t purchase Teracopy which I read would be great for something like this.

DNS Server Initial Replication

Hello,

The past two weeks I have been attempting to migrate my domain from WS 2012 to WS Essentials 2016.

All seemed to be going well with the domain migration, and I was able to transfer all the FSMO roles. Then I noticed the DNS server won't start due to the following error.

"The DNS server is waiting for Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) to signal that the initial synchronization of the directory has been completed. The DNS server service cannot start until the initial synchronization is complete because critical DNS data might not yet be replicated onto this domain controller. If events in the AD DS event log indicate that there is a problem with DNS name resolution, consider adding the IP address of another DNS server for this domain to the DNS server list in the Internet Protocol properties of this computer. This event will...

Windows Server Backup Schedule - Formatting the disk has failed.

Hi Everyone

I'm trying to configure a Windows Server Backup schedule to 2x External Hard drives but cannot even add the first one. As soon as the Server Backup wizard starts to format the external hard drive, I receive the following error:

Formatting the disk has failed. Please ensure the disk is online and accessible.

The system cannon find the file specified.

I've read through dozens of posts but none of them are applicable to this issue. I've also tried to remove the Windows Server Backup from Features and add it again. The issue still remain.

Any help would be appreciated.

Windows File Server Indexing on Server 2019

Hi All,

I am looking at a file server migration in the not too distant future. I would like to go with a DFS namespace (namespace only, not replication) but I can see that historically the Windows Indexing / Searching service will not work when searching a DFS share. Does anyone know if this has been fixed in Server 2019 with the latest Windows 10 clients? Would Access Based Enumeration have any negative effects on searching also (Weather using DFS namespaces or not)?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Cloning Dell Power Edge 520 Security Camera Server to new server.

Hello everyone!

I was hoping to get some advice on cloning our current Security Camera Server to a new Dell server I'm currently researching specs on. The current server has a total of 8 Hard Drives, 4 of which are 300GB SAS 10/15k and 4 that are 2TB SATA 7.2k. I believe the SAS drives are in a RAID 5 configuration and the SATA drives are in their own separate RAID 5.

Will I need to spec out the new server with an identical storage configuration (potentially with larger drive sizes)? Also, can I actually clone everything over minus the OS and how?

Any help would be appreciated!

Home drives on DFS?

I've been reading several articles online and getting conflicting reports so I figure I would ask here:

Does it make sense to setup home drives on a DFS share?  I keep reading about drive mapping issues and I personally am concern that the share is visible.  From what i've read, you can't really hide this directory.

Thoughts?

I have laptop users that I want to be able to logon locally when they are inside my domain, but be not be able to logon to the laptop using domain credentials when they are using an outside network.

I can restrict them from being able to logon locally from GP, but then they cannot logon when the are in my networks.

I thought about a NAP but cannot find the options I am looking for.  Short of purchasing a product does anyone know of a way to do this with windows server?

Help, files being deleted from RDP session when it's closed.

I have setup an RDP server, cals installed properly and per user. Working great actually. But have an issue. The program we run is Icobal based. And if a user is logged into the program through RDP, and it freezes or does anything that would warrant signing out to close it, the program files disappear from the system. Gone, not in recycling bin. Just gone.

This happened on two occasions and is not a good thing, as it wipes out data. I have a continuous backup running on the folder that it is installed on and the data is stored. Was wondering if anyone ever saw anything like this before. It is new to me for sure..

Thanks in advance for any advice.
