2008 R2 to 2012 R2 Standard

This is my first server migration. I am migrating a server running 2008 R2 to 2012 R2 Standard. I am overwhelmed with what I can do to make this transition smooth. It will be done on a weekend, I am simply upgrading the OS, we will be using the same hardware(not thrilled about this, but budget cuts)
Any help with steps to take with migration, will be greatly appreciated! Anything to watch out for, etc.

Thanks again!

Is it possible to directly swap hard disks between two Windows servers?

So we have two servers with hard disks that are the same size and model, they are also running the same OS.

Is it possible to directly swap the hard disks between the two servers and keep the data on the drives intact?

Can we just power down the servers, do the swap and power on with no issues?

RDWeb App Remotely

Hi All, Got RD Web App running on Server 2019. One server in place currently which is running RD Web Access, RD Gateway, RD Licensing, Connection Broker and Session Host.

Created a DNS record locally so I can go to the server name or remoteaccess.company.com

So the system is working finally locally, I've setup port forwardin
g on my Smoothwall for 443 and 3389 TCP but for the life of me can't see it over my external IP. I haven't setup the CNAME or sub domain with my web host yet as wanted to get it working just over the external IP first.

Any help would be much appreciated. I've attached a few screenshots also.

DFS Replication + Failover

We have two Windows Server 2016 and we are using DFS.

Right now, one server share replicates to the other one and it's working fine.

Thing is, we want to set it up as a failover. If Server1 goes down, we want the users to keep working since Server2 is still up.

If I add a server on the DFS Administration Panel, I guess I have to choose the folder on the secondary server that is replicated from the first one, so it will continue working if primary server fails.

My question is, when I am adding the secondary server, it asks me about permissions. If I set it up to an already created folder, with all the info and permissions already working fine, would this settings about permissions affect to the folders that are inside the share? Or do those folders keep the permissions they already have?

Internal Certificate Authority setup best practice - why off domain for Root CA?

I've read in enough places to believe that when setting up an internal certificate authority the Root CA should be turned off and stored once the setup is complete.

My question is this: when reading through the guides to do so, much of the granular work seems to revolve around the Root CA being setup OFF the domain. What is it about setting that Root CA up OFF the domain that is so important? Why can't you setup the root CA ON the domain and thus be able to skip a few of those tedious steps.

I'll throw this guide out as an example:

http://guidestomicrosoft.com/2015/06/30/configure-two-tier-pki-hierarchy/#comment-46074

TL/DR

Why does the ROOT CA need to be setup OFF the domain when you use the two tier internal CA hierarchy?

User Logoff for CEIP

Good morning! I have a user that must be able to stay logged on to a server overnight to run a claims batch.  Said server keeps logging her off around 8pm, and I see in the event logs "User logoff notification for customer experience improvement program".  I have already gone in and opted out of CEIP in the Action Center on that server, and I disabled all tasks related to CEIP, and yet it is still logging her off.  This is also new.  It has not been logging her off.  Not sure where else to look.  When I research it, all I find is what I have already done.  Does anyone know what else I can do? We are never going to get paid if we can't gather up our claims :(  By the way this is a terminal server 2012r2 and she is connecting via RemoteApp from a Windows 10 client.  Thanks in advance!

DFS Namespace Permissions

We have a DFS namespace set up (\\domain.local\Shares) that points to \\server\Shared\ and has a semi-organized file system in it.

Shared\
Departments\
Finance\
HR\
Quality\
Projects\
Scans\
User1\
User2\
User3\

The "Scans" folder is where the issues I am having starts from. Our large MFP units are configured to allow users to scan to their own folder under Scans\. The scanners authenticate to the server with a generic account created for the scanners, and that account has write permissions on everything in the Scans\ folder. So, a document is scanned, gets saved to \\server\Shared\Scans\User1\doc####.pdf. Now, that doc####.pdf has permissions set on it that match the parent folder, giving User1, System, Administrators, and Scan all R/W access to it.

When a user copies or moves doc####.pdf to another location on the DFS Namespace, the...

File Explorer keeps shutting/closing down when on a particular folder. Why?

File Explorer closes for any user when in a particular network folder in a network drive.

I've changed the drive from replace to update in group policy. I've ran a security scan on that particular folder and then the drive, but found nothing malicious. I really don't know what is causing this bizarre issue.

Does anyone know why this is happening?

We are using Windows Server 2016. We are in a Thin Client environment powered by RDS 2016.

Thanks

Windows Update KB4474419 failing to install after reboot

Hey all,

I have a set of 50 servers that are cloned. They all receive the same updates, in the same way. These servers are running Server 2008 R2.

Of the 50, about 7 of them are failing to install KB4474419. I've tried manually downloading and installing the update. I've tried rebooting countless times. I've tried cleaning out Windows Update and installing again but I haven't had any luck. This update did install successfully on most of the servers.

What I am seeing is that the update installs initially and reboots. When the server is installing updates again during start up, it fails and reverts.

I can't find anything interesting in the Event log.

Anyone run into this issue? What can I look at to get this update installed?

New Windows Admin Center features

I know I bang on about how goot Windows Admin Center (WAC) is, and it's the future etc.

Well today Microsoft announced the 1903 Preview of WAC and it's so exciting I have to shout it out!

So with it being in preview that means only WIndows Insiders can download it, but it should be available within a month or so for all users (fingers crossed)

#1 - Email notifications for alerts in the WAC

#2 - Active Directory USers and Groups management tool

#3 - DHCP management

#4 DNS management

#5 Adding new connections by searching Active Directory

These are all huge new additions with more coming every month.

Read the full announcement here

It is quick to download and test, I can thoroughly recommend it!.

I am running into a weird issue where the Network adapter is saying "Network Limited" and it is not true.

I am able to access the internet, ping, etc. When I restart it goes away. A couple of days later sometimes weeks it comes back again.

I reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults   (netsh int ip reset reset.log)
&
I reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults, (netsh winsock reset catalog)

Has anyone had this weird issue?

How to generate internal certificate

Hi all,

I have been sent a couple of .req files by our development team for a new host they are working on in  and asked to process some internal certificates for our internal domain. Im happy with public cert generation but new to the process of internals ones. I believe we have an active CA on the domain but our main cert guy is on leave so cant ask him. Do I have to use a CA for this or can it be done any other way? Thanks in advance.

the VMMS.exe on the HyperV host is not starting. When I try to start the follwoing message is appearing.

"Windows could not start the Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management Service on local computer

Error 0x8007000e: Not enough memory resources are avaialbe to complete this operation"

My VM's are up and running as able to connect to them via RDP session however I want to get the Hyper-V manager working again. Am not able to reboot at this time due the fact that my 2016 exchange server is on that server and would not like to have a down time with emails.

Also I have noted that when I go to details tab in the task manager the vmms.exe is still showing as running but the service shows as stopped under services.msc.

I have also tried to run proc64 application and tried to kill the vmms.exe that it shows up but access is denied.

Please can someone...

Hello all,

I have installed windows server 2016 standard on virtual machine and installed Volume Activation Services role on it (i want to replace old KMS Servers, Win Server 2008 and 2012 are running now) , from Microsoft Licensing portal i have copied kms key and activated server, the same key i have used to install KMS host Key. I have checked and i saw, that clients are contacting the server, the server received requests. Now i want my KMS server to be able to activate for example : Windows 7,8,8.1,10, Windows server 2012, 2012 R2, 2016, also office product, for this purpose when i run the command on KMS Server: slmgr /ipk window pops up: "Error 0xC004F050 The Software Licensing Service reported that the product key is invalid".

Can someone tell me what to do, am i doing something incorrect?

Thanks in advance

.NET Framework 4 Deployment via MDT

I've been trying to deploy v4.7.2 via an MDT task sequence for Windows 7, but after waiting over an hour and still not seeing it finish, I'm wondering what I'm missing...

Here's the command that's being run:

Text
NDP472-KB4054530-x86-x64-AllOS-ENU.exe /q /norestart

I've got a slew of other apps that I've installed successfully via this task sequence, but this one is where everything hangs up (and I've even tried it towards the beginning of my task sequence, but it still hangs indefinitely)
