Virtualized a 2012R2 Standard server to VMWare, broke license activation.

To clarify...we virtualized this 2012 DC to a temporary VMWare host(same model server hardware but lower spec Xeon) so we could take the original server and turn it in to a VMware host and migrate that DC VM back to its original host but as a VM. That final migration is still processing, but at some point during all this work we received a NOC alert that the OS was using OEM licensing and that broke once it was virtualized, something I never thought to check unfortunately.

What are the chances it will activate once it's back on its original host it was licensed to, but as a VM/guest OS and not the host OS? Will Windows see that or am I boned and need to get this client a new 2012 license?

Edit: Also, what is a good way to check for stuff like this prior to virtualizing a clients server? Now that I'm thinking about it I'm not sure how I...

WS2016 - DNS reverse lookup zone does not show any PTR records

Hello everyone,

I have setup a lab environment with WS2016 servers in AWS (so there is no DHCP server in the lab env).

One of them is running AD+DNS.

The servers are in the same subnet (172.16.0.0/20).

I have the A records in the forward lookup zone correctly for the other member servers.

Created reverse lookup zone (031.172.in-addr.arpa) manually. The zone is Active Directory Integrated and the Dynamic Updates are set to "secured only". I have SOA records and NS records but the other servers did not register the PTR records.

On the other servers NIC, "Register this connection address in DNS" is checked.

Also tried to clear DNS cache on other servers and running "ipconfig /registerdns" but I do not see any

PTR records.

I seem to be missing something. Tried googling it but did not find any relevant solution.

16TB Patitioning

Good Day

I have the following issue:

I have 2X 10TB SATA drives setup on a HP ML350 with RAID 0.

I have installed Sever 2012 Standard.

Currently I have 16TB available which I'd like to use for the CCTV Backups since the Server serves as the CCTV backup server.

I have tried various partitioning tools but cannot create partitioning let alone format the available 16TB as storage.

can anyone point me in the proper direction please?

I can see the storage in the disk manager but all grayed out.

Thank you in advance.

Regards

Shaun

Containers on Windows Server

Windows Server 2019 introduced the ability to deploy Linux and Windows containers to the same host.

In my travels talking about Windows Server I have had very few IT Professionals mention that they are using or are likely to use Containers on Windows.

Containers are apparently the future for scalable robust and secure applications.

Do you agree, do you use containers?

Remote site unable to access RDP server

We have a Branch Office VPN setup through our two WatchGuard FireWare units and it has been working great up until last Thursday. No changes were made to the WatchGuard units at all, but suddenly our remote office can only see some of the ip addresses at HQ and one of the ones they suddenly can not access is our RDP server. I've pinged a bunch of addresses from there, but there doesn't seem to be a pattern to what it can and can't ping. If it can successfully ping it the trace route comes back clean, but if not it dies after leaving their location. Everything at HQ has been stable with no complaints, so I don't want to go all cowboy and pull random threads hoping something will work that will damage anything at HQ. Does anyone have any ideas? The only thing that changed at all previous to this issue was that I deleted a bunch of unused...

Server 2019 and SFTP

I have installed the built in OpenSSH on a 2019 server, set a default directory, and I can use the SFTP function in powershell to access the server and copy a file over. the problem is that I can only do this as a domain admin. I have added "AllowGroups domain\usergroup" to the the sshd_config file, but that does not seem to allow the users I want. It does cause the domain admins to not be able to login as they are not part of the allowgroup, but the users in that group can't log in. Looking at the logs, I get the following when I try:

5616 2019-06-03 11:00:10.252 error: get_user_token - unable to generate token on 2nd attempt for user domain\\username
5616 2019-06-03 11:00:10.252 fatal: ga_init, unable to resolve user domain\\username

Not sure why it's putting that double \ in there or if it matters. Anyone have any ideas on what I...

Mount Virtual Drive to Multiple Servers for File Redirection

I'm looking for a way to mount the same virtual drive on multiple onsite servers. The servers are used for the same Active Directory so users can log in from any office location with the same username and password. We will setup file redirection for their desktop, documents, and similar directories to save on a virtual drive. That way if they log in to a different location, their files are loaded on that desktop.

I obviously want to put some permissions on the folders as well to ensure only users that should have access to each folder have that access.

I've looked up virtual iSCSI, Azure Sync, AWS EFS, old school DFS, etc. but everyone keeps saying "bad idea" and to do another option which then is also labeled as a bad idea.

What is the ideal situation? I'm mostly tempted to just dive into DFS for three servers to test out just because...

Decommissioning DC - Unknows on what Is Connected

Hi All,

I am in the in the process of decommissioning someold 2003/2008 DCs, unfortunately the changeI haveput through CAB to decommission this DC was deferred due to unknowns with what is connected to it.

It was suggested installing Wireshark but felt this wasn't the best method for obvious reasons.

I am working out a way of trying to achieve this by using the built in tools to try and meet this criteria that has been set.

However I don’t believe that this will leave us any wiser to be fair as there will be so many IP addresses communication with the server (and hardcoded entries do not have to be using LDAP so all Authentication will have to be looked at).

Has anyone else come across this issue before and does anyone have any solutions to be able to achieve this?

2008 R2 -> 2012 R2 Domain Controller Upgrade

$

Hello,

I have a site with multiple domain controllers. 1 of them needs to be upgraded to 2012 R2, I have watched a few videos and done some reading in where the host of the information mentions the domain has to be upgraded. Is this the case? Or is this only the case if this were the ONLY domain controller within set network?

If someone could shed some light into this it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

IIS 8.5 multiple server & sites SSL Certificate update

$

Hello,

I have a renewal of our wildcard domain cert that is on all of our customers servers and a few servers that are multi-tenant servers.

I've been trying to find the best way to try and do this via powershell so I can use PDQ Deploy to push out the new cert during maintenance hours.

I keep finding how to create new sites and new self signed certs but nothing that shows me how to change each site from current cert to the new one that is to be installed.

I know how to install the server via powershell I just need to set it to update each site ssl cert binding. Of the red box above.

Also I couldn't find anything that would allow me to see what cert is bound to each app either. I do have some customers that use their own certificates as well. Don't want to inadvertently re-place those with possibly an incorrect url cert.

Any help is...

DC replication tombstone life exceeded. Best practice?

I have two DC's, both 08r2. Just noticed today (1 man shop; but I know...no excuses) that one of my DC's stopped replicating after a restore that I apparently screwed up after a power issue in March. Here is my DC diag replication failed message.

My thoughts that I wanted checked are: To keep PCU-DC1 and just demote and blow away my second (PCU-DCW01), spin up the new one and promote so I can resolve this.

I have been crafting some GPO's etc on DC1 and other changes for Azure connect/365 that I'd like to not redo if at all possible. Just wanting a bit of guidance here on what path to take.

server 2019 added security measures

I am setting up a company file server that houses sensitive data. I want to lock this down so only certain people within the company see it at all and reduce its visibility in the highly unlikely event that our network is compromised by a hacker.

I have setup 2 hidden shares with the typical NTFS security settings that limit access to a select users but I want to add the following. 1) keep the server from showing up in the "Network Locations" listing (out of sight out of mind) and 2) also limit any access to the server to a select group of PCs if in the event that the authorized users credentials are compromised. With this setup, in order to access the server at all, you will need to 1) know of its existence 2) Have security rights using MFA with the correct ID/Password while using a particular PC. This would also limit RDP access as...

Windows Server best environment versions

Hello,

We have all our server on 2012 Version but we now got a new physicall server for a role for file server since there is 2016 and 2019 version on the market. I wonder which will be better option for the file server for better performance or for a better communication between AD and file server. Is there any problem if i go forward with 2016 than waiting 5 years them upgrade the 2012 file server to a new one or select windows 2012 version since the AD is 2012.
