Looking for recommendations on file server migration products

Hi All,

We are planning to do a large volume migration (hundreds of TBs) from a Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008. This is the first time we are undertaking a migration activity and, as such, I have been researching different migration products.

During my research, I came across paid products such as Miria (from Atempo), DataDobi (from DobiMigrate), and Secure Copy (from Quest). But looking at many discussions here, I am seeing that free tools such as Robocopy and Microsoft File Server Migration Toolkit are also reliable options.

So, my question is two fold:

1. Has anybody here had any experience using paid products? Would greatly appreciate it if you can share your experience.

2. When would I want to use the paid products instead of the free tools?

Thanks,

HSH

SBS 2011 domain controller dying, promote 2012 R2?

$

Hey Gang -

My customer has a SBS 2011 server that is the domain controller for the network.  There is a 2012 R2 server connected to the network and is housing the customer's data and also serving remote desktops.

The SBS server is in a reboot loop and is wreaking havoc when users are attempting to access their data and their remote desktops.

Is there a way to make the 2012 R2 server the primary domain controller and just retire the SBS server?  Should I do this (if it's possible)?

How to browse to a server using UNC without being prompted for credentials

Hi,

I have a server which is not joined to our domain, running Windows Server 2016 that I am trying to browse to another server with, on the network, using the UNC path to browse into one of it's shares. When browsing to the share, it prompts for credentials. Is there a way to have this credential window removed when browsing to a specific "share" folder. I believe the permissions are set correctly as "Everyone" group. Whether I browse using \\servername or \\servername\share, both brings up the credential window. FYI, if I enter the correct credentials, it does go through and I get access. But from this one server, I need to access without entering in credentials.

Server advice needed for AD + Print + DNS

The site current has two older Microsoft servers.

FS1 (OS Windows Server 2008 R2 – out of support January 2020)

Active Directory server

HOME drive (this is our HOME drive and all the shared data files for the site)

DNS Domain Name Services

FS2 (OS Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard)

Active Directory server

Carbonite backup software

HOME drive data duplicate (DFS-R not setup by me, so not too familiar, yet)

DNS Domain Name Services

So, I need to get a new server for AD services to get off 2008 R2. So, one (1) server needed here. I’m guessing even though I’ll get 2016 or 2019 OS on new server my max AD is 2012 R2 until I get rid of FS2.

FS1 will not go away immediately but I will get on new AD server for AD and then remove AD services from FS1 (because of 2008 R2)

I will need to move DNS services...

Windows Bluekeep patches causing Win32k.sys 0x0000008E BSOD

I have a 32-bit Windows Server 2008, SP2 server that I am having a horrible time attempting to patch.

Recently it has fallen into my lap to maintain and while it was about 4 months out of patches, I have been able to update it to having 3 remaining patches left, 1 of which is optional.

KB4499149, KB4474419, KB4499184(Optional)

However when I attempt to install said patches, either as a group or one at a time, they all install and upon reboot causing a BSOD 0x0000008E noting the Win32k.sys. I am able to afterward boot into safe mode and either manually uninstall the update and reboot to normal mode or the system uninstalls and reboots automatically putting itself back to normal mode. This BSOD mentions typically being associated with memory or drivers. I have verified the memory seems fine and in working order.

I am guessing it is driver...

Event 158 Time-Service VMICTimeProvider

Freshly installed Server 2019 (latest ISO from April) with Hyper-V role installed. I'm getting Event ID 158 Time-Service every now and then multiple times a day on my R720 and my R740xd got that event only when it rebooted. Both servers are installed/built the same as I follow my build procedure I develop for each server OS. I don't ever remember seeing these events when these servers were 2016 Hyper-V.

I initially thought I needed to re-register w32time, but that didn't work. Then I noticed that the VMs needed their Configuration Version upgraded to 9.0 for Server 2019. That still didn't stop the 158 Time-Service events from appearing.

Anyone know about this and if it's safe to ignore? I don't really want to push this into production unless it's clean.

As it stands right now the R720 only has a single VM on it (Server 2019) and the...

Trouble installing KB4499164 on server 2008r2

This last Security rollup patch that was said to be critical from Microsoft, i was able to update all but a handful of machines. One is a server. Here is what i've done so far.

I've run Windows update troubleshooter multiple times.

I've reset Windows Update Components, all steps per Microsoft IT Pro Center article.

I've uninstalled all patches since March 2019 and tried to reinstall

I've downloaded the patch and tried to install manually from the Microsoft Update Catalog site.

I've run sfc /scannow and rebooted

i've installed the Microsoft Windows update readiness tool

I don't know what else to do, numerous reboots later, i'm pulling my hair out here and don't have much left now! :-) Any other suggestions? The 3 other pc's are all win 7 machines, haven't even gotten to them yet. 1 is a Training pc, other are 2 laptops off network right now,...

Map drive for person based on which computer (site) they log into

We have two sites, A and B. I created two security groups called SITE_COMP_A and SITE_COMP_B and put the computers that are located in each site. I also have a security group called SITE_STAFF_A and SITE_STAFF_B.

I want to have a GPO that only maps //share-site-a/folder for SITE_STAFF_A when they are in SITE_COMP_A. When they move to SITE_COMP_B, they don't get any mapped drives for SITE A.

Currently I created a GPO, with a mapped drive. I added SITE_STAFF_A in security filtering and unchecked apply GPO for authenticated users.

Now do I go to item-level targeting and use a security group for SITE_COMP_A ?

Or do I make a user policy and put it in the computer's OU and then assign the group of PCs for it?

Domain computers losing network connection

Hi all

We had a powercut a few weeks back and since then various computers keep dropping off the network, when i static them they come back.

i worked out that some of the computers were pulling DHCP from the router not the server so i turned DHCP off on the router.

what i seem to be struggling with is, i static a PC, then in the morning that same static doesnt work so i have to switch the IP around.

ive done all the usual stuff ipconfig /release renew etc ive removed reservations then reserved the new static which will work when changed back to optain automatically, but only for the day it seems

we had an 8 hour lease time of the dhcp

I'm a bit stuck and now wondering if its just a case of delete every reservation & lease and remove the pcs from the domain and rejoin it, then reserve the IP that the machine is given?

is that the best way...

VHDX Performance When Near Capacity

$

I understand why, on a physical drive/array, once you start to go over 80-85% full you start to have performance degradation. But for a VHDX disk, assuming the underlying drive/array has plenty of space, is there any performance hit for being near its assigned limit right?   Seems like there shouldn't be, so long as there is enough free space for any given file operation, but I can't seem to find a place where this has been addressed directly.

Thanks for your time.

W32TM permanent behavior change - if client thinks DC is missing

$

Hello,

Earlier this year, I introduced new domain controllers into our environment, and decommissioned old ones. After this, I noticed some of our clients not syncinc time anymore, and I had to reset w32tm to look at the domain heirarchy with w32tm /config /syncfromflags:DOMHIER /update

To me, this begs the question, what circumstances would cause a client to permanently change its time settings? I can confirm from event logs that syncinc was happening from the old DC, but I don't see an event that tells me that w32tm had changed its source permanently.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Changing the lan IP of a direct access server

$

We have moved our direct access server from one site to another, as part of this move the lan IP has been changed.

Since the change we are getting a 'DNS not working properly' message which i suspect is preventing remote machines from authenticating so they are stuck with a connecting message.

When i delete the DNS entry and recreate it the IPv6 address does not change and still references the old ipv4 address

I have rerun the Remote Access server setup and the Ethernet adapter does show the new ip address however the Prefix configuration still references the old ip address (I suspect this should have changed)

Does anyone have any ideas on how to correct this? There really isn't much written that i can see about changing the internal ip address.

Thanks

Robocopy to copy folders/files but inherit permissions from the destination

Robocopy has bit me a few times and although I have become more familiar I would rather verify what I am doing then just do it.

I need to know the robocopy switch that will complete the above.

It sounds like  /COPY:DAT may do the trick but I want to verify. I know that this is the default but my question is will the default do what I am asking?

All assistance appreciated.

Caseware Time shortcut via UNC path breaks

$

Hi Everyone,

Bit of an odd problem today - I have an RDP server with CaseWare Time 2015 on it. If you are unfamiliar with the program, it installs onto a network location, and workstations have to run a netsetup to install the necessary components locally. When running the programs, you launch PA.exe which is located on the network share, not on the local computer.

I have had a couple of occasions recently where it will just stop running, and users will get the error "this exe is not a valid win32 application". Users that are already logged in seem to be able to continue to function, but new users cannot open the program. A restart of the server will fix the problem, but of course that requires me to kick all users off the server.

The exe is normally accessed by a shortcut that points to its UNC path. I found today that while it is...

I am trying to get LDAPS working on a Server 2016 DC. Got cert for auth.domain.com from GoDaddy, put it in personal store.

From Win 10 workstation using LDP.exe i can connect to DC with LDAP on 389 to FQDN- auth.domain.com AND I can connect by server name to LDAPS 636

When I try to connect to FQDN to 636 I get the error:

ld = ldap_sslinit("auth.domain.com", 636, 1);
Error 0 = ldap_set_option(hLdap, LDAP_OPT_PROTOCOL_VERSION, 3);
Error 81 = ldap_connect(hLdap, NULL);
Server error:

I have a client that has a server 2003 sbs server

They are not using exchange. the only have some files on there and special database software

They have about 5 pc's and about 7 users or so.

Is there an easy path to change the domain to the latest windows server 2019 or maybe 1 version back.

As there 2003 sos is only 32 bit and a new system is needed.

They don't use dhcp they do have part in dns but there router also has its on dns

Is this tool much better of we choose to do a new domain setup

Which overall process would be quicker?

Standalone Root CA with Enterprise CA

Starting to setup the Standalone Root CA (non-domain joined, offline mostly).

During the setup, there's a field for distinguished name suffix. Some videos I watch leave this blank while others use their DC=ad,DC=example,DC=com

Which is the correct method - or why do some do either? Again, this is the standalone Root CA and not the Enterprise Root CA.

Also - some remove the CRL Extensions that have the //ServerDNSName/CertEnroll while others keep it and even add additional ones.
