Pros/Cons of various approaches to Hyper-V Backup

So I've recently posted a similar question, but maybe I wasn't clear enough on what my real concern was as I received some responses that weren't very helpful. I'll try again. Please forgive me. :)

I am trying to understand main Pros and Cons of various approaches for Hyper-V backup. The methods/technologies are as follows:

1. PowerShell script running on the Host to export the VM and save VHD's (and all related files) to the NAS (set to run as a scheduled task).

2. Windows Server Backup running on the Host.

3. Various 3rd party solutions (including but not limited to Veeam, Altaro, etc).

What I have: 1 physical Host - Server 2016 (only role is Hyper-V) with 1 Guest VM (roles are AD, FS, RDS).

What I want/need: the quickest and easiest way to restore/recover when/if needed.

As you can see I'm not running a huge farm of Hosts and Guests. The...

Questions on Migrating Windows Certification Authority

We are a small business with several Windows Server 2012 R2 virtual machines (VM), and I am starting to plan the migration of the functions of these servers to new Windows Server 2016 or 2019 VMs. One of the old servers, which I’ll call “OldDC”, is our one and only domain controller (DC) as well as our one and only enterprise certification authority (CA). The current CA has a name of something line “OldDC-CA” where the host name is part of the CA name.

I understand that it is preferable to keep the DC function separate from other functions, so when we migrate to the new servers, I want to separate the DC and CA functions. Thus we’ll have two new servers named (for example) “NewDC” and “NewCA”. But I have a couple of questions on this migration.

  1. Since we are pretty small (15 users total), I would like to avoid having a server only...

Port 443 in use

Hi,

We are looking to run a webserver on port 443 however it fails to start and the supplier have advised that this is because another process is using port 443 on the server? For testing purposes we have it running on port 4433 and it works.

It appears from the info below that PID 4 is listening on port 443 however I am unsure of what PID4 is?

Cannot Load Windows 10 Images on Booted WDS

Hi there.

I need to deploy few machines with a custom windows 10 with pre-installed softwares.

I manage to sysprep a windows 10 from the exact same Make and model machine and manage to capture the image using Image Capture from WDS.

I'm using a Windows Server 2008 R2 with WDS. I have already added the boot image for WIndows 10 and as well the OS Image. Things that i have made sure to work:-

- Credentials to read and execute the image file
- Same HAL type for the boot and OS Image

The problem is: When i boot into WDS from the client machine that i want to deploy, I cant be able to see the Captured Windows 10 Image. I added a Non-Captures Windows 10 Image as well to check and it doesn't display either on the List of Images. Instead I have all my Windows 7 Images and others is being displayed except for Windows 10 Images. All my images are X64....

Hyper-V Server 2016 - no applicable updates

Hi,

I just installed Hyper-V Server 2016 (the hypervisor) on a Dell R710 via Lifecycle but I am already having issues.

I tried to run Windows Update while logged in as  admin but it keeps me telling that there are no available updates and since i am on build 14393 that cannot be the case.

I have searched here and already tried to run the followinf commands without luck:

 DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth  and  SFC /scannow

Any suggestion on how to solve this?

I suppose that I could also manually install a cumulative update but I am unsure of which one to pick from the catalog.

Many thanks for the help

Silent Install for VMware Workstation Player

Just thought I'd share my CLI command that we use for installing VMware Workstation Player for our students to play around on VMs with. We needed to find the CLI so that we could deploy it through MDT:

"\\\deploy\Software\VMware Workstation\VMware-player-15.0.4-12990004.exe" /s /pass /v/qn REBOOT=ReallySuppress EULAS_AGREED=1

Hope it helps someone :)

Group Policy Object Not Applied

The non-working GP item is an msi install of an Outlook plugin.

Configured as: Computer Config > Policies > Software Settings > Assigned Applications

Deployment type = Assigned
The software source is accessible to all Domain Users
GPO Security Filtering is Domain Computers & Domain Users
The GPO link is at top domain level and so should apply to all domain machines.

Policy modelling shows the the policy should correctly apply but when checking the same user/PC combo in real life the policy does not get applied - gpresult does not show it as applied or not applied, it doesn't exist as far as gpresult is concerned.

All other policies apply correctly and as expected, all are scoped in the same way

NIC Teaming and Hyper-V 2019 Virtual switch problem

I have a strange problem with my Hyper-V Setup:

On my Windows Server 2019(Fujitsu RX2520 M4) I have 2 base network adapters and 4 additional ones(Intel I350-T4).

I have created 2 NIC Teams, one for VMs(from 3 i350-t4) and one for Hyper-V Host(from 2 onboard adapters, one working and one as a backup).

On this level everything works, I can ping every interface from the LAN.

But when I try to create Virtual Network Switch(external, tried both enabling and disabling “Allow management OS to share this network adapter”) from one or the other NIC TEAM, no VM has connection with LAN network, and what makes me scratch my had more is that pinging 2 VM on the same Virtual Interface from Hyper V Host, one VM responds, the other not.

From one single adapter(one from i350-T4 card) I created Virtual switch and then every VM that uses that connection...

How do you sync time in your domain?

When I learned about AD, etc for server 2008 it was explained that usually for AD you have one DC probably the FSMO master sync to an external time server whether NIST, NTP pool, etc. I tried this with a new server 2016 DC that is our new FSMO masters I tried our ISPs NTP server, Nist servers, NTP pool both configuring with w32tm and using the domain controller GPO policy. None of that worked. I eventually was getting annoyed and was like maybe just better do the simple way and change the setting to use the internet time like windows 10 does. That seemed to work at first, but over a month or two it went from synced to 24 seconds slow to 40 seconds slow.

We are implementing a keyfob authentication system which only allows a one minute skew, and any skew in that minute also effects how long the code is valid for the user. I am looking at...

DCOM error 10016

I've tried chasing down this error in the past, but never had any luck finding a solution. I'm seeing it on a File Server running Server 2016. It doesn't seem to be causing any issues that I've noticed. It's more of an annoyance. Perhaps someone can offer a fresh perspective? Thanks.

Permissions Issue

We have a custom in house application that temporarily logs on to a Windows 7 machine to access index files in a secure Network folder. The system account that this app uses has Domain admin rights, but when we try to run the application we get access denied. We can log in as that account and create new files and sub folders with no issues. My question is, could there have been a Windows update that might have caused changes to the "Impersonate a client after authentication" function? The legacy file server is running Server 2003, which we are still in the process of getting away from. The client is running Windows 7.

Hello!

I seem to be up with weird questions so here is another one!

Scenario I run terminal servers for access and I have two users (out of 200+) that when they disconnect their session and go home to reconnect it has logged them out. Receiving the attached error... Again this is 2 users no one else is experiencing this.... I have checked GPO settings, reg, profile etc. any ideas?

Best way to transfer data from Windows Server 2003 to 2016?

I have a potential client who is wanting to upgrade their server to a newer model due to their current one starting to give out. They have windows server 2003 and the server they will be getting will have server 2016.

What would be the best method to transfer all their data, programs, etc to the new one? I checked with the companies they have specific programs from and made sure the programs would still work if moved to a newer version of Windows Server.

I have an issue which I find totally bizarre, the thing is we have a Windows 2012 AD domain ,which we needed to upgrade to Windows Server 2016. We upgraded the schema and introduced 2 Windows server 2016 domain controllers. All the AD replication and DFSR logs for sysvol are clean no errors observed.
However after the upgrade any service in Windows which uses a custom Ad account or any IIS app pools using the custom AD service accounts stopped functioning and everything in IIS complains that the account needs logon as a batch job right and as well as any service using the custom AD account complains that the service needs logon as a service right. When we add these rights via the group policy things start working fine.

What confuses is me that this environment has been running for more than 4 years and we never had to set a logon as...
