Unable to search content within Excel documents stored on Server 2016

Hello,

I'm helping a client who is an archaeologist, they often search for certain codes within PDF documents, Word documents, and Excel documents. I was tasked with making searching these files quicker and easier.

The server storing all of the data is a Windows Server 2016 VM in a Hyper-V environment that acts purely as a file server with the search service installed on it. It's also worth noting that on each individual workstation that will be searching for these certain codes is configured to search contents of files as well as the file name.

I started off with folders that include only PDF documents and indexed this folder, verifying that .PDF extensions could have their contents indexed. Searches from Windows 7 and Windows 10 are almost instantaneous, great!

I then indexed another folder that includes only .DOC and .DOCX documents and...

I am looking for a solution to archive filesserver. They have over 20 years data and don't need those data often. They only need data for the last 5 years. Can you please suggest some solution so that we can archive any files older than 5 years and still retain the same folder structure, and when we need any old files be able to go and access them.

We have 300 Windows 10 x64 clients with Office 2016 x64 installed.  Our clients receive Windows 10 updates, but for some reason, Office 2016 is not being patched.  Also, SCCM reporting shows all 300 clients as missing Office 2016 updates.  What is causing this issue?

Authentication for Shared Folder

Hi All,

Good Day!

We have a NAS in our Network where are files are located, this is joined in our Active Directory w/c handles the authentication on the shared folder. Recently the Domain Controller are having issues and have experience unexpected shutdown. So we have setup another windows server join it in an existing forest and set as a backup domain controller. Then we have re-joined the NAS to both primary and secondary domain hoping that when the primary is down it will handle the authentication of the shared folder but unfortunately the purpose is not met.

We have checked the replication of users/computers and DNS on both servers, it was all present.

Hoping to have an insight from you guys,

TIA,

Veeam Backup Server 2019 HyperV

I have installed the latest Veeam replication and backup on the 2019 hyper-v server. The backup worked fine for three backups and then failed with an error as follows.

" Timed out waiting for the required VM state.
Error: VM sr-SQL2012 remains in busy state for too long.

The checkpoints under the Hyper-V manager are stuck at 9%. This is the third time and everytime to resolve the issue I have restart the Hyper-V host to get the backups working again.

I have also patched it with the latest updates and still keep having the issues. This is a brand new server which has just been setup over the last week.

Any solutions to resolve this issue would really be helpful as I need the checkpoints to be created in production state as all are application consistent servers i.e. Exchange, SQL and AD.

How do I know how much server I need to buy?

I am relatively new to IT management, and I have decided that I want to bring a remote, hosted server in house. Currently, we remote in using RDC. Our device specs are:

Server Platform Dell PowerEdge R310

CPU(s) 1 Xeon X3470 (4 2.93GHz cores)

Memory 32GB

Hard Drive(s) Drive 1: 1000GB SATA . Drive 2: 1000GB SATA . 2

RAID: RAID-1

There are a few reasons I want to bring the server in house 1. we are paying recurring fees to not own/control a device 2. we have had issues with our current host 3. I want to maximize performance of the device to increase usability, speed of access, and overall efficiency 4. we are using 2008R2 which is reaching EOL 4. I want to separate work environments using VMs to better control environments 5. I want to build a DC and implement Active Directory for the company 6. I want to improve server security by having...

Windows sever 2019 bitlocker on dell t320 server

Hi all,

I have dell t320 server running windows 2019 with latest Dell Bios.

tpm 1.2 hardware

Is it possible to encrypt only the data drive (on second hd) using bit locker and tpm.

When I tied this I got prompted to use a password or pin for unlocking the drive. I thought having a tpm chip means we do not need to do this ?

windows device manager show the tpm chip is enabled and listed under security devices

What needs to be setup to allow use of the tpm chip for encryption ?

File Not Always Locking for Read Only Access

User A opens an Excel file for editing.

User B (me) opens the file on his computer. He gets a message that says the file is locked for editing, do I want to open a read onlycopy? This is the correct behavior.

User B (me) fires up a laptop, logs in again as User B. Attempts to open the same Excel file. This time the file opens for editing with no error message that the file is already open by another user. This is bad behavior.

User C tries to open the file, and also get to open it for editing; this is again an error, it should be locked for editing.

Why is locking working sometimes but not others?

Background:

Running two servers with DFSR to replicate files between them. Referrals are enabled in DFS namespace and one server is set to "first among all targets" while the other is set to "last among all targets".

We had a DNS failure last week...

Best practise for Hyper-V Backups

Hi all,

So I've been reading here on Spiceworks as well as researching elsewhere and still non the wiser.

Basically what I have is very simple setup: 1 physical host with 1 VM guest on it. Host does not have any other roles apart from Hyper-V and the VM runs AD, FS, RDS (although this isn't really relevant to the question).

My question is regarding best/easiest/cheapest ways to backup what I've got. Main concern is backing up of the Guest as it is the one that runs all the services and holds the data. The host is only the host with nothing else on it (but would be nice to have it backed up too if possible).

Based on my research I would say that Veeam gets the most love on the internet with Altaro and Unitrends going second and third (in no particular order). So I'm sure there will be people advocating for all of these solutions and I'm...

DFS Server

Hello,

Just need a bit of help with DFS Management on our DC.

We had 2 old DCs, lets called the DC1 and DC2, We recently got 2 new DCs, DC3 and DC4

We have downgraded DC1 from all the roles etc and its now offline but when we disable the DFS service on DC2, we cannot display any namespaces on DC3 and DC4

We have 2 File servers, so I've added DC3 and DC4 to NameSpaces Servers and removed DC2, so users still can browse to all the shares when DC2 is offline, but cannot view or edit the namespaces

Am I missing a step here?

Thanks

Windows Server losing network connectivity if updates are needed

Hi,

Has anyone else encountred issue with windows server 2012 R2 losing network connectivity if it's awaiting updates (installation or reboot)?

I've got 2 Hyper-v hosts that are randomly losing network connection, (no ping), disable-renable NIC doesn't work, only restarting the host (no special event log). The machines show normal connectivity icon but no packets are trasnferring. Needless to say all virtual machines are disconnected as well. It happens approx. once in 6 months.

I noticed it usually happens when updates are waiting to be installed or the host is waiting for a reboot after updates installation, if I wait more than a couple of days.

Is this the way windows server trying to get my attention?

Server 2016 Administrator Acount has no Rights

This has me baffled and annoyed at the same time. I have a Server 2016 hosted server. No domain controller, just a regular install with Sql and Oracle and some other apps. When logging into the machine, i use the administrator username and password. But when trying to uninstall software, or run an elevated command prompt, i get access denied on all my cmds. I tried to create a new administrator account, same thing. When i start the server in safe mode with admin credentials, all works 100% and i can for instance run sfc /scannow without any problems. Any suggestions or fixes will be greatly appreciated.

Problem scanning to SMB folder after domain controller upgrade

$

We had a Windows Small Business Server 2008 acting as our domain controller and print manager. Last week we installed a new DC running Windows Server 2019 which took over the DNS role from the SBS-2008. On our Konica MFD printers, we had configured several scan-to-SMB Folder destinations that have stopped working since the DC upgrade and we updated their DNS information. The Konicas are not connected to the domain. We are seeing error codes 16711703 (failed to connect to the server) and 16714711 (have yet to identify) on the Konicas.

I'm not sure what to look for/at to fix this. I've tried using the destination server's IP address instead of its name but it makes no difference. Nothing's changed on the printer configurations or the SMB folder destination (Windows Server 2003, I'm doing my best to upgrade all this old stuff). Can anyone...
