Exchange 2010 RBAC issues

I am trying to create an Exchange 2010 RBAC role group  for our service desk. I have created a test management role group "Service Desk staff" and assigned the below roles using the Exchange Control Panel:

Distribution Groups
Mail Enabled Public Folders
Mail Recipient Creation
Mail Recipients
Public Folders

Then I access Exchange 2010 via the Exchange Management Console from a client PC with a user account that is in the Management Role Group I created.

I am able to do most tasks such as create/modify distribution groups, create mailboxes and edit the properties of it.

But for some reason I cannot perform the below:

1. Trying to add/remove members from a Distribution group results in an error

Add-DistributionGroupMember

or
Remove-DistributionGroupMember

2. Trying to create a Public folder results in an error:
MailExceptionNoCreateSubfolderRight: Unable to create folder.
(hr=0x80070005 ec=1282)

3. Trying to mail enable/disable a Public folder results in an error:
MapiExceptionNoAcess: Unable to set properties on object.
(hr=0x80070005 ec=2147024891)

4. Changing permission of Public Folders results in an error:
MapiExceptionNoAcess: Unable to modify table.
(hr=0x80070005 ec=2147024891)

Can anyone provide some feedback on how I might resolve this and perform the above tasks using RBAC management group for Exchange 2010? Appreciate any help. Thank you.

Windows 7 / Server 2003 Roaming profile synchronization error at logoff (ntuser.

Hi all,

I have implemented Roaming Profiles for a few test users on Windows 7  PC's (Windows Server 2003) and everything is working well aside from  one error I'm seeing at logoff ('Your roaming user profile was not  completely synchronized.  See the event log  for details or contact your administrator.')

The event log reveals event ID's 1504 and 1509.  1504 is flagging the  fact that Windows cannot update the roaming profile completely.  1509  shows the following:

'Windows cannot copy file C:\Users\jtest\ntuser.pol to location  \\server\Profiles$\jtest.V2\ntuser.pol.  This error may be caused by  network problems or insufficient security rights.

DETAIL - Cannot create a file when that file already exists.

Other observations:

  • This issue occurs with all test users upon each logoff attempt  except for the very first logoff, where there is no network share copy  of ntuser.pol to get in the way.
  • Prior to logoff, the network share copy of ntuser.pol has an  older timestamp than the local copy.  This is not a cause or symptom but  it leads me to believe updating the network copy of the file at logoff  is normal/required behavior.
  • If I delete the network share copy of ntuser.pol prior to  logoff the error does not occur.  I don't suspect file permissions are  the cause since I used the same user having difficulty logging off to  delete the network share copy of the file.
  • ntuser.dat has no problem overwriting itself upon logoff.
  • I was able to repeat the problem with two windows 7 clients.
  • Disabling A/V on the server has no effect.

I've been all over the usual suspects (i.e. group policies affecting  roaming profiles, file/folder permissions, installed every hotfix  relating to roaming profiles and folder redirection, and googled every  keyword) and came up empty.  I confirmed offline  caching for the profile share is disabled.

Does anyone know what may be going on here?  I'd greatly appreciate a point in the right direction.  Thanks in advance.

Imaging a Win2003 server, need advice!

I'm considering imaging a Win2003 server and installing the image to run on different hardware. I've imaged a regular PC with Clonezilla, but never a server. I have a dying 2003 server I need to keep operating for the near future. The on board NIC and raid controller have failed on this machine. I installed PCI cards for both and got those services back up. It is a backup controller on our 2008 domain, but most importantly it runs our very antiquated accounting software. The accounting app will not run on anything higher than 2003 and XP. I have access to similar but newer hardware and in much better shape that I'd like to install the image on.
Any advice, pointers, references or words of encouragement would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

DNSCMD fails

Running Server 2003 R2 on our DC which is also running DNS. To get a backup, I tried to run the following command "dnscmd dc1 /zoneexport dc1.com dc1.com.bak" directly on the DC1 server, but I get the error message: "command failed: RPC_S_SERVER_UNAVAILABLE 1722".  Not sure why I would get that since I'm running it on the same server I want to back up. Then I realized the servers name was hsdc1, so I used hsdc1 in place of dc1 in the command. I now get this error message, "DNS_ERROR_ZONE_DOES_NOT_EXIST 9601". I have very little experience with DC's and DNS, so please be gentle!  lol

DFS General Question

I have configured DFS on a Server 2008 and Server 2008 R2. The Server 2008 is the source.

I may have a confused myself on the general purpose of DFS. The data on the Server 208 server was replicated to the Server 2008 R2 server, now the data no longer resides on the source server but the shared drives can still be accessed the same way: \\SourceServerName\SharedFolder.

Is this was DFS supposed to do? The data does reside on the 2008 R2 server. Now, what if the R2 server is down, will data be unavailable since that's where the data physically resides?

I thought the data would reside would be replicated to both servers and changes would be replicated to both servers?

Thanks in advance!

Installing new Domain Controller in place of the existing DC

I have an existing domain controller running Server 2003. I want to install a new DC with Windows Server 2008 that I already configured with AD and added users etc. Could I connect the new Server to the network and give it a static IP address on the same network and then just join my machines to the new domain controller? The new DC has the same domain name as the old DC. Thanks!!

Creating a domain across two locations

i am researching for a project we will be doing this year, and part of it involves moving from a workgroup to a domain.  we currently have two locations, each with about 25 users. we have a site to site VPN between the two locations.  i am not a IT professional, but i am the closest thing my company has and may get some proper training depending on the direction this project goes.  my goal is to eliminate any down time that is more than a few hours.

because we have to locations, i would like to setup the system so that each site acts as a fail over for the other.  i assume i need a DC in each location, with one of them being primary.  do i need a second DC in the primary location, or will the one in the second location suffice?  if i need a backup DC in the primary location, does it need to be on a different physical server or would just another VM be better?

In-place upgrade of DCs (2008 R2 > 2012 R2)

We have 2 DCs.

Both DCs (DC1 & DC2) are running DNS, DHCP & AD services

DC1 is has all FSMO roles and is also running AD Certificate services as well as acting as a RADIUS server for our ASA & wireless controller (for AD login to wireless).

Any concerns about doing an in-place upgrade to 2012 R2 as opposed to building new servers and then moving everything over?

I figure it'd be easier to do an in-place upgrade instead of dealing with the hassles of the cert services.

Website Binding

I know how to bind a "Default Web Site" in IIS to a specific IP address and port.  In fact, I have bound a website to port 8080.  I can get to the main site using http://URL:8080, but when I click on a link within the site the port designation goes away and defaults back to port 80.

Does anyone know a way to bind all pages within a site to a specific port?

Is it safe to run Repair on 2003 AD?

I have a 2003 Server Primary AD, and been having alot of logon issues where it shutsdown upon login.  I wanted to try a Repair of the system files, but I am unsure what this might do to the Active Directory.  Is this safe?

Urgent - New DATA MPLS - Now random servers can't ping

Very weird issue...

We are getting our cmd prompt ping reports going to

208.74.11.196 from 'some' of our computers.. static IP mostly... but some DHCP.

That's our www.winsmith.com address...  We have one DNS/AD server that cannot get on the domain because it keeps showing this 208 address when it should be showing an internal IP.

1. I checked ALL of our PTR records on the DNS servers. that address ONLY exists in one www pointer.. for our website.

2. I checked things like route print, host files, DHCP server to see if it is being handed out someplace. Can't find it!

I am having random issues connecting RDP to some PC's.! I tried to ping our one main server, got the 208 ip. Tried to ping a workstation? got the 208 number. Tried to ping another workstations? Got the correct IP address!

AHHHHH!!

Configuring DHCP/WDS on server

Het there,

So please excuse the "noob" nature of this question, but I am attempting to configure a local server as a DHCP/WDS host, and am running into some trouble...

First off, I do not know if my server has to be before or after my company's firewall/router, and if I need to configure the server to host a scope of IP addresses that does or does not include this said firewall/router..?

I understand that this is simple networking topology, although I do not know the ideal way that I should physically configure the server in accord with what is already in place (which is essentially just one main firewall/router and multiple switches feeding a couple different departments).

Also, I cannot see any clients trying to obtain IP addresses. I have tried many different types if scopes, most notably 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.254 with a subnet of 255.255.255.0 and also a few other ones, none of which producing any results.

replace failed domain controller with new server same name not DC

$

On a time crunch here... I had a DC fail on me this week.  I have many other DCs in the domain.  the old server held a number of shares (user files and general files) and did print services for a site.  I've created new VMs for print services and a new server for User shares.  The main file shares were restored to a temp server, on site, that must be removed for another project (reason for time crunch).  A new server is arriving today.

What I would like to do, since there are a lot of references to the old server on Users' computers (shortcuts, mapped drives, linked files, etc) is to create a new server to host the original file shares.  I would like this server to have the same name as the original server, but I don't need it to be a domain controller.

Is this possible?  Would I be able to force the Active Directory to remove the server from it's meta data if a new, non-DC, server is up with the same name?

Like I said, domain-wide, I have 6 other DCs.  At this site, I have a working DC.

Would it be better (or even possible) to go ahead and set up the new server with same name/IP and add the DS role (dcpromo it)? Will it cause issues because it's a new machine (VM or other)?

Opinions? Advice?  Anything is appreciated!

Certificate about to expire or already expired

Hi there

I am worried about a Warning message on my 2008 Domain Controller. This message has been coming up for a long time now, but I am not sure if it is something I should do anything about.

Please see attached for the error. I have discovered by looking at the thumbprint what certificate(s) is being referred to. It is for "Sites" and also a remote one that I am positive does not exist anymore. I am more worried about the "Sites" one.

Could someone offer some assistance or guidance here.

Corporate deployment of VLC Media Player

Does anyone have any idea how to deploy VLC Media player 2.1.3 corporately? Preferably through Group Policy? The users don't have admin rights, and it's a small network, so I'd like to allow it to update itself and to download media information (e.g. check both options in the privacy and network access policy"  dialogue box, and allow these to run without requiring elevated admin credentials. Can this be installed and configured through GP? I can't find an msi, and the charity  doesn't have the $$ to buy software to create one. The environment is Windows 8  windows 2012r2 domain.

We are running Kaspersky Security Center, shich can deploy EXE installers, but there doesn't seem to be a command line switch to configure these options.

Incidentally, I'd like to allow  adobe updater app to do the same.

Folder Security Permissions - Inheritance Confirmation

$

Hey guys I feel like I am losing my mind and I just want to confirm with someone else.

If I remove the inheritance property on a subfolder then add the existing permissions and change / add / remove the rights for the ones I want to keep.  This will only adjust that subfolder and its contents or further subfolders correct?

The reason I ask is I made a change to a sub folder recently and all of the permissions elsewhere seemed to update with this new change!  I am hoping it was a "too many cooks in the kitchen" and someone else on the team was trying to firefight and accidentally overwrote something but I just wanted to make sure before I spend another fabulous hour repairing these folder permissions.
