ADPREP /Forestprep Language Problem

$

We are running two domain controllers on our network which are 2012. These have been upgraded in the past from 2008 R2. We are in the stages of getting out domain ready for 2012 r2 Domain controllers.

We are trying to run the adprep /forestprep command as MS websites are telling us to. It is coming back with the problem of

“Can not open adprep.dll.mui”

“Did you fail to copy over the adprep language folders?”

We are running this on the main DC Server and running this as the full Administrator with command prompt running as administrator.

I have been browsing the internet looking for a resolve and not had much luck. Disabled all non windows services, check the language settings and tried to rename language folder. We are still unable to get any future.

Does anyone have a resolve for this problem please?

Server 2012 Standard Event ID 4015 DNS

Hello Everyone,

Just checking to see if anyone else has experienced this at all.  I have a brand new installation of Server 2012 Standard.  The server is a Domain Controller running DHCP and DNS for the office.I keep getting these random event IDs in the DNS logs.

The DNS server has encountered a critical error from the Active Directory. Check that the Active Directory is functioning properly. The extended error debug information (which may be empty) is "". The event data contains the error.

Log Name: DNS Server

Source: DNS-Server-Service

EventID: 4015

I tried multiple things from Google to try and resolve the issue but to no avail.  Anyone have any thoughts?  Everything seems to be working ok, but we are having connection issues through our citrix server that I am wondering if this may be the cause.

Windows server 2003 and adding 2012 R2

I have a Windows Server 2003 AD/DC that I would like to replace with Server 2012 R2 Standard. After I add the 2012 to the domain, would I need to set it as backup domain controller before migrating all the services over? Also, do I need to change the domain and forest function level to 2012 before or after migration?

Deleted files from a work station appear on a map drive search

I have a user that moved and deleted files from mapped network drive, server 2003, the files are now located on an external drive.  When she does a search on the mapped drive, it still shows her that the files still exist on the server.  When you try to open them, they are not there and cannot be open.

At this point I don't know if it is an issue with the client computer or server.

We tried on 2 other computers and performed the same search, the results were the same.

Any ideas?? Thanks for the help!

Win2012 HyperV cluster Failover/HyperV Manager disappearing guest issue

We have a HyperV cluster using HA storage. One of the VM guests was moved to the cluster and was incorrectly installed. What I’m trying to do is basically delete everything but the VHD and recreate the Guest. Easy. But I have found that even after you delete the guest in the Failover Clustering you still have to delete them out of the HyperV manager before you can remove the old folders. It’s like there are two programs (Failover cluster manager and HyperV manager) “touching” the folders. The problem is I selected the “refresh” button in HyperV manager (silly me) and all of the VM guests disappeared from the display. The guests are all fine and we can still manage them through the Failover Cluster Manager but I can’t see them in the HyperV managers on any of the cluster nodes.  I need to see them in the HyperV manager so I can delete them if needed.

Server 2008 R2 Terminal Server Farm

I have been doing a lot of research on this lately and I am trying to figure out the best configuration and actually get everything to work properly.

Right now, what I have going on is I have a single terminal server which hosts about 30 users at a clip. They only use one application so it's been fine, but now they've added 2 other applications which is starting to bog down the server.

I figured I could just put the load balancing from Server 2008 R2 into the mix. I've been reading a lot of articles that center around the Web Interface. Does this also work if your just using RDP?

I set it up the way I thought it should work and of course, it didn't work. I couldn't RDP at all. I thought maybe it was because I was using TS1 (I have TS1, TS2, and TS3 - All identical in software, etc..) as the session broker? Basically I setup TS1 as the session broker and then pointed TS2 and TS3 as well into the farm. Once I enabled the load balancing checkbox and set all the servers to 100 which was the default. I could no longer log into RDP from externally. I figured that was because of some kind of NAT or something? I haven't been able to find any articles which describe what type of firewall setup I need in order to get this working. Also, I setup the round robin DNS internally, but cannot do that externally. Some of the clients connect via IP so to change that all would require a lot of work.

Please let me know if this can be done how I envisioned it or if something will need to get purchased 3rd party.

Thanks!

Pros and Cons of migrating everything to cloud (domain/file server/exchange)?

Hello All,

I am toying with the idea of migrating everything to a managed hosted server.. Basically alleviate the possibility of an actual in-house server rack.

I did google this topic, but only found articles based on the opinion of the author.. So i'd like to pick the brains of the tech's of spiceworks on their thoughts..

Quick snippet of what I have and will want to migrate:

Exchange -> Hosted Managed Exchange

File Server -> Cloud storage

Domain Controller -> Managed Server

I am looking at Rackspace and liquidweb currently as my vendor options..

Thoughts/Suggestions.. thank you!

Multiple 4625 Errors in Security Log, New 2k12 essentials server

$

Hey all,

Just recently set up a server 2012 essentials domain for a client. Domain was set up from scratch. Since the set up we've been seeing multiple Event ID 4625 entries in the security logs: An account failed to log on.

Subject: Security ID: SYSTEM Account Name: THISPC$ Account Domain: THISDOMAIN Logon ID: 0x3E7

Logon Type: 3

Account For Which Logon Failed: Security ID: NULL SID Account Name:
Account Domain:

Failure Information: Failure Reason: Unknown user name or bad password. Status: 0xC000006D Sub Status: 0xC0000064

Process Information: Caller Process ID: 0x2c8 Caller Process Name: C:\Windows\System32\lsass.exe

Network Information: Workstation Name: THIS WORKSTATION Source Network Address: - Source Port: -

Detailed Authentication Information: Logon Process: Schannel Authentication Package: Kerberos Transited Services: - Package Name (NTLM only): - Key Length: 0

This event is generated when a logon request fails. It is generated on the computer where access was attempted.

The Subject fields indicate the account on the local system which requested the logon. This is most commonly a service such as the Server service, or a local process such as Winlogon.exe or Services.exe.

The Logon Type field indicates the kind of logon that was requested. The most common types are 2 (interactive) and 3 (network).

The Process Information fields indicate which account and process on the system requested the logon.

The Network Information fields indicate where a remote logon request originated. Workstation name is not always available and may be left blank in some cases.

The authentication information fields provide detailed information about this specific logon request. - Transited services indicate which intermediate services have participated in this logon request. - Package name indicates which sub-protocol was used among the NTLM protocols. - Key length indicates the length of the generated session key. This will be 0 if no session key was requested.

I've been researching this issue for the past 2 hours, but I'm not having much luck with solutions, or finding the root cause. Exchange is not running on this box. This is only running AD,DNS...

Anyone experience this before? I confirmed there's no malware, I've run nltests on the domain controller which return NO_SUCH_DOMAIN... so I'm not too sure where else to go...

Thanks in advance for the help

Server CALs: Do charities require them?

$

In performing an internal audit for one of my clients, we discovered they are lacking certain server CALs for their network infrastructure. When we approached their IT manager about it, he stated that they do not require CALs because they are a charity. This is the first I've heard of this, I'm wondering if anyone can provide me some details on whether or not a charity organization would need Server CALS (for example, user CALs for Server 2012). My understanding was that they can get charity pricing, but nothing is free (or in this case not needed entirely).

Thanks!

Activated RDS CAL license. Now Wyse S10 thin clients can't connect

The Wyse S10 WinTerm (thin clients) are running an old version of Windows embedded, and so an old version of RDS. I'm thinking this is the crux of the issue. The exact error on the WinTerm is:

"Remote Desktop Disconnected
Because of a security error, the client could not connect to the remote computer. Verify that you are logged on to the network, then try connecting again."

PC's have no problem connecting. I found this TechNet article (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/e172f4c6-dbd1-4aa1-b6d7-ffff06b40a17/...) about the X509 Certificate registry keys, but I can't reboot the TS machines until after hours tonight. Plus, I was not able to get web activation to work, so I had to call in to MS. I'm hoping there is maybe a security settings I can "loosen' to allow these WinTerms to connect.

We have about 30 or so WinTerms that will be DOA tomorrow morning if I can't fix this today. Help greatly appreciated!

Hide printers on the server for some users

Hi All,

I have quite an issue.

We are running SMS Software on a Windows Server 2008, that is being used by over 50 users.

On this Server we have 40 Printers.( which is an issue when trying to print from SMS Software)

I was wondering if we can allow some users to see some Printers and other not.

50 users= 5 offices= 40 printers

10 users per office, 8 printers per office.

Need to make sure office X can see only 8 printers that his/her office has not all 40 printers.

Shared Folder Permission Problem

Hello,

I have a folder 'Shares' shared to the entire organisation. Within this folder there is subfolders e.g 'Finance' 'Marketing' etc.

I have locked it down so only certain security groups can access their respective subfolder e.g Finance.

Problem is users e.g sales people who do not have access to the finance folder (they get a access denied message) can right click on the Finance and go to Security and add themselves as a user, even though they cant access the file.

Permissions are as follows:

'Shares'

Sharing permissions - Everyone Change / Read

NTFS Permissions - Domain Admins Full Control, Authenticated Users Traverse / List Folder applies to this folder only.

'Finance'

No inherited permissions, Domain Admin Full Control.

So why can users edit permissions of the finance folder?

550 Access Denied IIS 7.5 Anonymous from non Domain Member Server

$

Hi,

I have an issue with a new Server build with IIS 7.5 FTP Server allowing anonymous access to some virtual directories.

We have a server in our DMZ that has a service that creates some xml files and fires them up to a database server on our production LAN via FTP. This was working fine on our previous Server but that was Windows Server 2008 with IIS 6.0 Managed FTP.

The DMZ server is not a domain member. Nothing has changed on the firewall, I created a new FTP Site on the new IIS7.5 install and added the virtual directories with anonymous access, I can access and upload to them on my laptop, but cannot from non domain member machine.

Anyone seen this before?

Cheers

Sean

Users can move read-only files

Hi,

We are using windows server 2008, and I was wondering why users (windows 7) are able to move read-only files, I would prefer them not to be able to but it seems to be linked with the read attributes.

Files not refreshing Server 2012R2

We're running server 12r2 as our AD and primary file server. I have one user who is unable to see updated files in the shared network "scan" folder. When I log into the server I can see the file, and as a temporary workaround I've been manually moving the file to her user folder when she needs to scan.

I found this article that relates to server 08r2, but when i go into the registry editor on the 12r2 machine I don't see the reg keys they are talking about in the article. Do I have to create the keys? Where the keys moved? Is there something else I should be checking?

Thank You for the help.

Renaming Domain Controller.

$

Hi Friends,

Recently i changed my domain name from xyz.com to abc.com in Server 2008R2 using Rendom function. I joined all the client computers to the new domain without any problem. But i found that, both Primary and Secondary domain controller name was not changed and i was still able to ping old domain name from any client computer. So today i found some article on how to rename the domain controller using netdom. On primary DC i successfully changed name to DC01.abc.com. I followed the same steps on Secondary DC and operation went well. After restart i found that secondary domain controller name was still DC02.xyz.com. it was unchanged and i was still able to ping xyz.com from client computer. Both DC contains old domain name information in forward lookup zone and reverse lookup zone.

My intention to change domain name to abc.com was because we had some website hosted on cloud under xyz.com and if any client computer were not able to access unless i change DNS IP on their computer to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.8.4.4. I still have the same problem even after renaming Domain Name and DC.

Your help will be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

WDS Capture Image - winload.exe corrupt or missing

$

Seemingly out of the blue our WDS server has developed a very annoying issue with a capture image that up until today was working perfectly previously.  What we are now experiencing when we network boot and then select the "Capture" boot image is an error that states:

"Windows failed to start.  A recent software change might be the cause.  To fix the problem:"

It then lists three items spanning from "Insert you windows disc and restart your computer" to "Click repair your computer"  The main thing of note here is that it states "File \windows\system32\boot\winload.exe status 0xc000000f The application or operating system couldn't be loaded because a required file is missing or contains errors."

I've tried created a brand new capture image (several of them actually) and all of them produce the same results.  Does anyone have an incite into this issue?
