SBS2003 migration to Server 2008R2 Standard Issues

I'm in the middle of a server migration from SBS 2003 to Server 2008 R2 standard. Yay!!

I've got the new server joined to the domain, but I'm afraid to dcpromo the old server because when I just disable the NIC on that thing, the new server gives me the error that it can not connect to the domain and none of the AD stuff is accessible.

I already transferred the FISMO roles to the new server using the NTDSUTIL and doing a 'netdom query fismo' shows that the roles are all on the new server. But I can only see that when the old server is online and running.

I am checking event logs for the Global Catalog notifications but the only thing it shows on the new server is that the old server is the GC for the domain.

I have tried changing the server IP address on the new server to be what the old server was as well to see if I could get it to loop back and see itself, but that didn't work either.

Any ideas on how I can make this DC work without the old one online before I dcpromo the old one?
