So something odd happened. I was using ADUC (RSAT) connected to a virtual DC (Server 2008 R2) after hitting a refresh command on an OU, I got a message saying that the DC was unresponsive. I checked vSphere and found that there was an alarm triggered for guest High CPU usage.
Next I checked the performance tab and saw that the CPU was pegged at around 100%. I tried to RDP to the guest but it would just hang at trying to connect. I could still ping it, though. I also tried to open up a console session from vSphere but it would not let me Ctrl+Alt+insert. I tried to remotely connect via Computer Management but it timed out and said it couldn't find the path. I was forced to reset the server from vSphere. It booted just fine (minus the start Windows normally prompt).
My question is: How can I tell what was spiking the CPU after the fact?
