The importance of certificates in 2008 R2 environment - I'm lost !

Hello

First of all, I must admin, I'm a certificate noob and I get goosebumps every time I need to do any cert work.

I managed to install a certificate for my Exchange 2007 and that's pretty much it.

The topic is very vast and I'm struggling to find a good article about it. Its either full of holes and assumptions or focuses on a very specific issue.

Here is my problem I encountered recently.

I had 4 domain controllers, 2 x 2003 R2 introduced by my predecessor and 2 x 2008 R2 configured by me.

Recently, I decommissioned the 2003 R2 ones, everything went fine but after day or 2 I started having problems doing RD connections to my servers.

I was getting this:

An authentication error has occured (Code: 0x80004005).

I'm still not exactly sure what happened but I found this article:

http://atherbeg.com/2011/09/30/event-id-29-kdc-certificate-availability/

I could only follow this article to the point where it says to enable some auditing, the rest is unclear to me.

I'm still not exactly sure if I did right following this article. I installed the CA role on a member server, not on the DC, but to be honest, I don't know what I'm doing when it comes to certificates.

I would be really grateful if someone could provide me simple instructions or articles about importance of certificates in Windows Domain (2008 R2).
