Server 2008 R2 Pictures Open Slowly

Currently working through a problem with pictures opening progressivly slower off of a file server. Here are the details:

O/S = Server 2008 R2, File Server Role (using SMB protocol)

Server Make/Model = Dell R710 (plenty of memory, CPU speed, drive space, RAID, etc.)

Note = I have multiple servers setup more or less just like this one - but only this one has the problem. This is our newest server, recently installed.

Problem = Opening a image file is slow from users desktops (vs opening direct on the server, which is as fast as expected). Each image can take up to 15 seconds to open.

It does not matter what type of image file, nor (relatively speaking) the size of the image (most of our images are under 5MB each)

On the users end, it does not matter which program they use to open the image (Photo Viewer, Irfanview, IE, etc.)

All users located in the same building and on the same network/switch as the file server

Images inside folders with many images seem to take a little longer to open than images inside folders with few images

Other type files (.docx,. pdf., etc.) open as fast as expected....even if a one of these type files has images embedded.

Rebooting the server fixes the problem - but it comes back over the course of the next couple days. Images will go from opening instantly, to taking progressivly longer - 3 sec., to 8 sec., to 15 sec.

Maybe someone has experienced this before or has a suggestion to offer?

Thanks
