Virtualizing Domain Controller - Server 2012 Best practices?

I will be doing a complete domain redesign. Right now we are using SBS2003. I have a server that I have been testing virtual installations on and I recently got Server 2012 R2. Since I was testing the server there has been a lot of progress with Hyper-V virtualization - new virtual disk formats, settings, options etc. I was looking for some best practices to consider when setting it up. Such as disabling snapshots on the domain controller guest vm, which virtual disk format to use, memory setting recommendations etc. Basically what settings can I improperly configure that will cause me grief later on?

Will be using Hyper-V Server 2012(free standalone baremetal version) as the host, with Server 2012 as the guest vm. I will be using OBR10 installed locally(DAS) on the server(would this be better than iSCSI connection to separate storage?)

Also, on a side note - I was considering changing our domain name and I did not know if it would cause me a headache for any reason? Are there best practices for naming? we use "gci.local"

There are not too many custom group policies most I will be changing anyway, is there  a way to avoid the whole migration process of promotion of the new server to the domain controller(basically set it up off of the domain and just take the other one down and change the domain memembership of each computer?
