Windows Server Backup

We are planning on not using BackupExec any longer due to their long development cycle for server 2012 and server 2012 r2. The issue is that windows server backup can only store 1 backup at a time. I need t to be able to do incremental as well as multiple images.

I was think of creating a storage pool on each of the serves that need to be backed up, and on each server I would create a virtual disk. This virtual disk will be stored on the network share folder. Then I would mount the VHD and from there set up windows server backup to back up the VHD.

Would this work? Is there a better way (budget = $0 hence the use of WSB)?
