Migrating two SBS 2003 domains to a brand new Server 2012 R2 domain (SIDs, RIDs)

Hi all,

We currently have two completely separate infrastructures, each running on an SBS 2003 box. Far from ideal.

Over the coming months I'm going to be merging these infrastructures and creating a brand new Server 2012 R2 / Exchange 2013 set up, and I was wondering if anyone could help me with the following queries:

  • Rather than joining a new DC to the existing domain which will be kept (companyname.local), I'd like to re-create that domain, thus keeping the original domain SIDs, is this possible? This will make some aspects of our migration a lot easier. I want to keep the old SBS box relatively intact in case of any issues.
  • Is it possible to import users along with SIDs? From my understanding the SID is partially composed of the domain SID?
  • On a similar note, can you preserve machine SIDs so that they don't all need to be manually re-joined to the domain if domain name, domain SID etc. remains the same?

I'll give you a bit of background since it looks quite backwards what I'm proposing there...! Domain A has around 40 users, 60 client devices. This domain name would ideally be kept and used across the merged infrastructure. These users use bespoke software as well as Microsoft Dynamics NAV which would theoretically continue to work without issue if SIDs etc. are kept the same.

Domain B is much smaller, and users use mainly Cloud-based services such as Salesforce, so I'm proposing to simply create them new accounts on the brand new domain and manually migrate their data etc.

Let me know if you require any further info, trying to get my thoughts out has never been one of my strengths!

I know these are relatively small numbers of users / devices, but I'm the only guy here so I want to make things as easy as possible!

TL;DR - want to merge two domains, want to try and keep SIDs the same to make it easy.

Thanks in advance!

Adam
