Supporting Mac clients for printing

Hi all,

I have a number of Mac users complaining about the difficulties of using our print services. The print server is simply Windows Server 2008 sharing printers out as part of an AD environment, and at present the Mac users have instructions on how to use smb:// including embedding their username and password into the connection string.

The annoyances seem to arise over two areas, one when they have to change their AD password (as part of the security policy), and two having to manually set all the settings for our Xerox multi function devices, which of course Windows clients don't have to as they get the settings when connecting.

To add to the hassle Bonjour is disabled on our network, and the network itself has a number of different subnets (the print server for example is in a separate subnet from client computers) so anything involving broadcasting straight up won't work!

I've been looking at options like third party software (e.g. ExtremeZ-IP) or even running a single Mac server to host all queues and pointing Mac users to this but would be interested if anyone has anyone alternatives I could investigate, or any stories from the trenches they'd like to share.

Cheers!

Luke
