MDT: x86 boot WIM keeps generating as x64 architecture

Using the latest MDT/WDS: Workbench 6.3.8450.1000, WADK 10.1.17134.1

- imported a W10 x86 image (first x86 MDT image so far)

- built a task sequence for it, and is enabled. Task sequence's 'OS Info' shows it as x86.

- MDT Production share Properties: WinPE is set up for both x86 and x64.

- WinPE x86 has x86 OOB drivers, and a selection profile that points to it.

Whenever I update or 'completely regenerate' the boot images, the x86 one always comes out with x64 architecture, which then prevents the x86 image from getting displayed.

Testing with the Build Lab's x86 boot image, it works fine, and shows the Build Lab's x86 image when booted with.

Edit: If it matters, the client hardware that the x86 image was initially grabbed from was 64-bit. Client also uses BIOS, not UEFI.

Thanks for all help in advance.

Corrupt volume - To much IO crashes server

Hello,

I'm at a loss with this disk and am looking for ideas. Our server has been randomly going offline and would take an hour to come back online. After troubleshooting i found one disk causing the issue. It appears to bounce the server once IO gets to high. If i watch disk utilization and start a single file copy it will eventually get to %100 percent and crash the server. If i try to delete a file, it instantly crashes. If i try to use robocopy to move files, it instantly crashes.

When windows starts back up it will sit at the windows logo and spinning circle for around an hour before it loads. If i unmap this volume it comes right up. When presenting it to windows it locks up disk management for around 20 min before its available. We have other disks from this same Compellent SAN presented to the same servers, I think this rules out...

Our clients are running VPN (PPTP) Windows PC which works well. Now accounting is running the latest Mac OSX upgrade, we have to switch to L2TP protocol. I have gone through all of the details that I can find to allow PPTP as well as L2TP (with preshared key), but still no go. I keep getting the same error "The L2TP connection attempt failed because the security layer encountered a processing error during the initial negotiations". NPS is enabled.  Can I use both PPTP and L2TP? Please any help I will appreciate

HP ProLiant DL180 G6 Not showing all the drives

Hello,

I upgraded my HP ProLiant DL180 G6 server today by adding 5 additional hot swappable drives. Currently I have RAID 1 configured with a hot spare. I thought I could go into HP Array Configuration Utility within the operating system and setup the new virtual drive for the RAID. It only shows the existing RAID array and one free drive. I don't see the other 4 drives listed. I'm assuming I need to boot into the RAID BIOS settings and configure the new virtual drive there. Is it possible to setup the new RAID virtual drive within Windows and not have to down the server?

Thanks,

How are you using WAC?

Who is using Windows Admin Center, and how?  Where and on what do you have it installed?  Are you managing on-prem, cloud, or other (?) resources with it?  If you lost the machine it's running on, how simple is it to rebuild the environment (or migrate platforms, etc)?

Is it saving you time?

Is it preventing errors?

Does it offer greater accountability/visibility?

Why or why not?

No longer have access to a drive on our domain

Hello guys,

Me and my boss are at a loss why this workstation can't access a certain folder on our domain.

I reformatted a computer and re-added it to the domain.  We can access all of the domain folders and servers just fine except for one of our shared folders we have on the domain.  I'm unable to find out why.  I logged into workstation using my credentials which has admin credentials and the domain can detect and ping workstation just fine.  What am I doing wrong?

hey guys. I have a web app (asp) running on Win server 2008R2 and SQL 2008, IIS 7, Reporting services. I'm thinking to upgrade everything to the newest version (win 2016, sql 2016). What challenges I might face? Will we need to re-program our application or it still will be compatible with new sql and IIS? I know its a long shot but thanks for any ideas.

RDP Server Getting Full (RAID config)

Server: Windows 2012 Standard R2

Hi guys,

The company I'm working with has a server that is running RAID 1 (I think, and will make a trip down there to confirm). They have a couple 750GB (or smaller) 10,000 RPM SAS drives which are getting full quickly because they use the server as an RDP server to users have a lot of files stored on the server as well.

I have a couple possible solutions and wanted to get some pro input on them:

1) Option 1 I'm thinking is to get larger drives, use Macrium to clone the RAID drives to the larger drives and pop them back in. My concern here is that the RAID controller won't like that since it already configured a RAID with the original drives. Input?

2) Option 2 is to just add some 1TB or 2TB drives as "extra" drives in the machine and then somehow reroute the RDP storage to those drives. Is that possible:?

Is there a way to clean up the disk drive DPM backs up to? The disk keeps expanding by 50 GB's every week and a half and it's starting to be a problem for us. I tried running the pruneshadowcopiesdpm.ps1 but I keep getting access denied in PowerShell. I'm running as admin.

Software Restriction Policy results in Black Screen when log in local account.

Hi all,

I'm trying to put up a SRP in place. I am testing it on a group of PCs and after I applied it, when I log into the local admin account on one of those test PCs, the screen is just black and I can still see the cursor and move it, can call ctrl alt del but that's it. When I remove the PC from the policy, I can log in local admin and see the screen as normal. I am clueless at which setting caused this. Oh Domain account is fine, only happens with local admin. Here is my SRP setting:

Is there an upgrade option to go from Windows Server 2012 to 2016?

$

I am currently running Windows Server 2012 R2 on a server.  I would like to upgrade it to 2016.  But searching on the internet all the solutions involve you already having the media for the upgrade.  In my Microsoft account I only have the option to buy Windows Server 2016 (with 16 core license) but there is no upgrade option.  It is far too expensive for me  to consider, about $1,200.  But is there an upgrade possibility at an affordable price, or do I just have to stick with Server 2012?

Can Windows Server 2012 be converted to Windows 10?

I have a Windows Server 2012R2 box.  I have moved everything from it onto AWS.  But it is pretty powerful so I would like to continue using it.  I don't need to use any of the "Server" functionality, I would just be using it going forward as a powerful workstation.  Is it possible to install Windows 10 over Windows Server, is there a path to do this?

Server 2012 network issues after recent update

I recently updated one of my AD/DNS/File Servers and it developed a strange issue. It runs server 2012 standard. After restarting the server to finish updates, it I started having network connectivity issues. The server was unable to resolve any hostnames. I tried using nslookup, which would just time out. Other machines could access its shares, active directory, and DNS just fine. Trying to ping itself by hostname showed that it defaulted to the IPv6 loopback address instead of its IPv4 address. All machines on the network have IPv6 disabled in the adapter settings (but not the registry), as does this server. I double checked just in case, but it was infact disabled. I made sure IPv4 was preferred over ipv6 using netsh. I've tried to disable IPv6 in the registry. I've tested a few things since but to no avail. The only way I could get...

LE acme_challenge cannot get it working under IIS 7.5 on server 2008R2

Hi,

I am trying to get LetsEncrypt SSL on IIS 7.5, but HTTP verification does not pass, because if weird MIME Types mapping in IIS 7.5.

The ACME Challenge generates random-named file without extension, which IIS by default does not serve. So I added "." as MIME extension and "text/plain" as file type. Tried with this on root and also on /.well-known/acme-challenge/ folder, but even with IIS restart I always get 404 error.

Any idea what else I need to setup for IIS 7.5 to get filename WITHOUT EXTENSION to show?

2016 Lab setup hoop jumping

Hi,

I am studying to get Windows Server certified and decided to take the Server 2016 exams. So I started setting up 2 labs: 1 at home with physical PCs and 1 at work using Hyper V. I have leaned a lot so far but ran into an issue getting all the installs to see each other. In the virtual lab, none of guests can ping each other; same at home with the physical boxes. I thought that it was because AD DS was not installed but that was not it. In searching the ‘net, the results are all links to power shell tutorials on disabling or enabling something with the Windows firewall.

Is that the new way of doing things in MS world now? Do enterprises have to go through firewall hoops to get their servers to talkto each other? I have been reading two different books for the first exam and no mention of the firewall settings, yet.

Thanks.

GPO not applying to Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 computers

OK so new to GPO's and working my way through some exercises. I have created a number of machines in a virtual environment including a virtual server (Server 2012R2) and a simple domain that all computers a joined to. I have already implemented a few simple User GPOs and they all work on all machines, no problems.

In this particular exercise I created a computer GPO to start Calc.exe on user logon. Linked the GPO to an OU I had created and then moved a WIn 10pro, win 7Pro and Win 8.1 Pro computer into the OU.

On the windows 10 Pro computer the Calc.exe program starts up when a user logs on, exactly as it is supposed to. On the Win 8.1 and and Win 7 computers nothing happens at all.

I did a GPresult on the Win 8.1 computer and the GPO doesn't show up at all. The other GPOs that I created for Users do show up but nothing on the computer...
