Move KMS from 2008r2 to 2016

Need to move our KMS licenses from a 2008 r2 server to a newly stood up server 2016.

Following this guide for the most part:https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/askpfeplat/2015/11/09/kms-migration-from-2008-r2-to-windows-serv...

First off any hints would be good. I plan on putting a full, wide encompassing guide once I am done on Spiceworks.

My question pertains to the output of cscript slmgr.vbs /dlv all. I run the command, it returns after a moment. Every single name returns Windows Server(R), ServerStandard edition. How do I read this return, am I suppose to query every computer's Activation ID to what it is?

No version information, 2008, 2008r2 or 2012r2. Additionally, I know our Windows 7 licenses are KMS also by running slmgr.vbs /dli on my laptop and serveral others. On the return of slmgr.vbs /dli it states the name: Windows(R) 7,...

Too Much File Auditing

Hi, we are looking to enable file auditing to send to a SIEM. I've got the Audit File System policy enabled and we've selected the files we want to audit but now we seeing audit activity for files that we didn't specifically define. I go into a specific file that our SIEM said was accessed but when I go to that file and look under Properties->Security->Advanced->Auditing there is nothing there. I've checked the root directory and nothing. I can even check other folders that I didn't see and modify a file there and they don't show in the SIEM.

Any suggestions or ideas why these are being audited?

Thanks!

Find invalid Shortcuts

Hello everyone.

Can anyone recommend a good program to find invalid shortcuts on a network / mapped drive.

Or an app that can be installed on server 2016 that searches multiple HDD's.

The apps i have found so far only seem to scan local profile and C drive,

we have 1000 upon 1000 of folders, with a lot of documents using shortcuts.

It would be great to be able to clean this up.

Hi everyone,

After creating/configuring DB redundancy which is take AMI from EC2 instance and deploy it, i got an strange issue.

I couldn't login to my new server using RDP without running it as Administrator.

Basically that workaround is fine but in case of RemoteApp, i had to download a RDP file from browser to my desktop. But i don't know how to run this downloaded RDP file with Administrator privileges.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Remote logon issue after installing new RDS CAL

I have a server running Windows Server 2008 R2. We need 4 concurrent Remote Desktop connections to the server at any one time, so we have purchased 2 additional remote desktop client access licences (CALs), giving a total of 5 CALs installed (including the Built-in TS Per Device CAL).

We installed one of the CALs about 8-10 months ago, so I was told that we've purchased another one that now needs installing:

I have gone to 'activate.microsoft.com', typed in the Licence Server ID, the licence type (TS or RDS Per User CAL) and the Agreement Number to generate the Licence Key Pack ID. I then entered the Licence Key Pack ID into the Licence Manager on the server in question, then restarted it to ensure the changes were applied. I informed the four users that they should now be able to be connected, all at the same time, so 3 of them logged...

err 1722 AD Cert Services denied request. RPC server unavailable

Hi Team,

Going through AD event logs and I have a few of these piled up.

Active Directory Certificate Services denied request 7667 because The RPC server is unavailable. 0x800706ba (WIN32: 1722). The request was for DOMAIN\CLIENTMACHINE$. Additional information: Denied by Policy Module

On Server 2008 R2

I did a bit of Goggle-Fu and most results came up being slightly different than my issue.

The client machines don't seem to be having any issues and I don't see any trouble on the servers. My only evidence of an issue is the event logs.

Can anyone explain what's happening and what I should try to remedy?

Thank you

MS KB3063109 - Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V Guest Update Freezes Server

Good morning all,

I am having an issue with MS KB3063109 on our Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V guest machines that are running MS SQL 2008 R2 and Active Directory.

After this update is installed, and the server reboots, it hangs at a screen saying "Getting Windows Ready". After about an hour it will finally boot to a login screen, but when you login there is no network and the server is inaccessible.

At this point I can restart the server into safe mode, the server rolls back the windows update, restarts again, into safe mode, and I can delete the SoftwareDistribution folder from C:\Windows.

Once I do that I can boot back into Windows and all is good. Until the server restarts again and attempts to install this update. I am unable to get the update to show up under required updates so that I can block it.

Searching I have seen articles that relate...

NTFS permissions issue

Hey fellow Spiceheads,

I am encountering an odd issue with NTFS permissions. We recently migrated our data to a new domain, and I set up the shares so that users can read/write/execute but not modify because we don't want users to delete someone elses work. Now i am encountering an issue where in the finance dept (2 users) where one user can save to one of the migrated files within the file share and the other can not. They are both apart of the same finance group where they are assigned read/write/execute and share the same permissions all the way down the tree. I have no clue what could be causing this. My understanding is read/write/execute will allow users to do everything but take ownership of file/folder and delete. The user who can save to the migrated documents was the owner of the file on the old domain, but when I Robocopied...

Managing Local Admin Username though GPO

My goal is to role out an admin account to all computers in our domain that have their password managed by LAPS (Local Admin Password Solution) I have gotten LAPS Deployed and Tested, although I have it set-up so it only works on Local Accounts named "Admin". A decent chunk of our computers were set-up with verifying Local Admin Accounts. For sake of simplicity lets call these accounts "OGAdmin".

My first thought is that I could also solve this issue with a GPO. So I also rolled out a the GPO "Accounts: Rename Administrator Account" Located

Policeies - Windows Settings - Security Settings - Local Policies - Security Options - Accounts Rename Administrator Account

I enabled this with "Admin". Now the GPO is being applied to the test computers, and the Local Admin Account with the name "Admin" is being added and managed by LAPS. However,...

hyper-v server network bridging solution?

Is there anyway to have two NICs in a bridged configuration? or have both connected to a vSwitch maybe? I know there is network teaming but I am planning on using one of the NICS to connect another machine to the network, so I am not sure if NIC teaming would work at all for that.

Is there anyway I could do this? it's server core basically so I can't just go into network connections and bridge them.

Event log subscription fails

I set up an event log subscription a while back on a 2012 R2 box, and it was working fine for a long time, I had to troubleshoot something today, and I found that it no longer worked.

When I add the server and click on 'test connection' the test succeeds.

However if I let it run, it'll eventually error out with this error

I checked on WinRM and it's config, ports, account, and those suggestions, all seems to be in place

Windows Server 2012 Datacenter missing AVMA driver

I have had a problem where I am unable to use AVMA to activate windows on my virtual instances. Today I went into the device manager on my host OS that contains Hyper-V and expanded the System devices to notice it is missing the Microsoft Hyper-V Activation Component. Does anyone know if I can download and install it from somewhere? Is it a feature I failed to install? Here is a screenshot of my device manager where I noticed it was missing

One SAN Cert for Exchange and Apache

I can't seem to find an answer to my question, and I suspect it's because I am missing a fundamental fact. In any case, my question is this:

I have a GoDaddy SAN cert currently set up to apply to my Exchange domain.  Let's call it www.domain1.com.  Can I add another name to it, and have it apply to www.domain2.com running on Apache on a completely different system?

In other words, can a SAN cert apply to multiple separate domains at the same time?  The phrase "Common Name" comes to mind, but I'm not sure I understand this.
