Deployment issue after OS installation

$

I am trying to install an image using MDT2012 task sequences. Thus far everything works until the OS installs (Windows 7) and then restarts, once the PC restarts it configures devices, gets to 100% and then prepares for first time use. At this point I get the following error:

Windows could not parse or process unattend answer file [C:\windows\panther\unattend.xml] for pass [specialize]. A component or settings specified in the answer file does not exist.

After the PC restarts (not always after the first restart maybe the second) I receive the following:

The computer restarted unexpectedly or encounted an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install windows, "ok" to restart the computer, and then restart the installation.

Not sure how I can check what step the task sequence is having issues with as my Monitoring does not seem to currently be working in MDT. I also cannot remember which logs to read to find out what's going on.

Small Non Profit Server HELP!

I am the IT Manager for a small non profit that currently has 35 staff employed. A majority of the staff use laptops but a lot are now in the process of getting desktops as well. A few users have recently been given access to company issued iPads. We currently have three office sites and we will be expanding to a fourth later this year.

Each site has a Fractional T1 running at 1.216 Mbps at this time. At our HQ, we have full access to the WAN and for our two remote sites we have minimal access to the WAN. Before I make harsh/hasty decisions I wanted to run this by the community to figure out what would be the best procedures to move forward. We are TechSoup approved already.

Our current goals are to:

  • Centralize File Storage and provide sharing (too many staff have USB drives and Cloud Storage galore with no control) + Mac Friendly.
  • Provide Remote access
  • Backup critical systems/servers
  • Deploy window images and office images out to pcs to speed up support issues/upgrades
  • Consider Visualization options
  • Consider AD/DC for authenticating users and locking laptops/desktops down with policies

Our current server is Dell PowerEdge T110,Intel Xeon X3430 2.40GHz, 4 GB ram, 1 TB HDD /w RAID1 and tape backup running Windows Server 2008 R2. Our Intuit QuickBase server is a promoted desktop. The Spiceworks server is also a promoted desktop. Our network is a hodge podge of commercial grade routers/switches and the occasional DD-WRT flashed router.

PS I am in the process of learning Windows Server 2012 (Trainsignal.com) so be gentle ;) I am A+ Certified but definitely in need of more help! I am also considering Pertino and even Copy.com to bring something to the table!

Preventing file locking in shared folder

We run a network with a Windows 2011 essentials and desktops using Windows 7 pro. Users always find problems opening files or editing them because they are locked/used by another user. In most cases these files are not opened or even used by any user!

Is there a way in Windows Server 2011 to stop the files from being locked so others can easily open them without contacting me all times. I know there is an option in Share and Storage Management where I can close all the files manually but that has to be done all the time.

Nearly third of our files have these problems.

Your help is appreciated.

File Server Control Delegation

Hey guys,

Quick easy question here-

Can I delegate the control of viewing "open files" on my file server to one of our programmers without over privileging him to the server?

I would like to have him just open up an MMC and connect to the server - then handle open files from there. How can I let him have that control but still not allow him to RDP or have any other admin control on the server?

Thanks.

2003 Server Enterprise as a workgroup server has stopped connecting

No domain controllers in network, two Win 2003 servers and 15 XP & Win7 workstations in network, one of the 2003 server computers has quit connecting through my network places and won't accept any connections, even though the computer shows in the network places of the other server and some of the workstations. The NIC doesn't show any issues and the problematic server does have internet access. It's been working great for over 3 years.

This all started when I installed a new server 2008 R2 into the network. Every computer on the network is communicating fine now except this one server, which of course has the companies key app on it.

This computer has also stopped showing up in the Spice network scan and only has the DNS and DHCP Client service running.

Thanks!

All i want to do is have this list of files published to a webpage; users can then click on any file they want to listen to.

We have windows 2012 server, and im trying to increase the C: Drive's disk space. The C: drive is 40 GB and I have only 100 MBs left. There was no available space in that server, so i shrinked another volume in order to create some room.

everytime i try to extend the C: drive space i get the error message "error extending volume size not supported". I was wondering if there is any other way i can extend the disk size.

thanks

Server 2012 VDI Certificates

Hi All,

I'm wondering if anyone has dealt with this scenario and could share how they proceeded.

I have a Server 2012 VDI deployment that's coming along pretty well. My question is about the certificates. I got a signed third party certificate that I installed on the RDGW, RDCB, and RDVH and when viewing my deployment properties all four role services show that they are trusted.

My issue comes up after logging into RD Web and then activating a personal VM. I then get a certificate error when my connection is passed from the RDGW server over to the RDVH because of the server name (name mismatch error) being different, and then I get another cert error from the personal VM itself when I get passed from the RDVH to the VM.

Is my issue because I didn't get a wildcard certificate and actually named it the name of the server handling the RDGW and RDCB? Say I get either a named or wildcard cert and install it on the RDVH, that warning would go away correct?

However, how do you get rid of the cert warning when connecting to the actual VM?

Windows Update Server using a Synology NAS

I'm looking at possibilities for setting up WSUS, or at least a WSUS equivalent, on our remote site locations that do not have a server. WSUS is what we use at the main office and locations that run a server. For our non-server locations, there is no budget for setting up a servers there, much less licensing for further copies of Server 2008 or 2012, but they all have NAS devices on site. Has anyone ever configured their NAS as a Windows update server?

I've heard rumors of setting up a Windows 7 machine to run WSUS, but haven't had any luck getting that to work (I know, WSUS is not supposed to run on Windows 7, but figured it was worth a shot). So, what are your thoughts? What have you tried? What worked and what didn't?

Failed to create external configuration store 0x80070522 (Server 2012)

Server 2012 Standard, Hyper-V role only.

I've been able to create VMs before, now all of a sudden I'm getting the error telling me I don't have the required privs to do so...

I've searched around and all my settings seem to be correct. I've already added the Server name as well as the user account in a GPO to Create Symbolic Links. I've also verified that NT Virtual Machine is given Log On As A Service privs (which has nothing to do with this issue). The user account is a local admin...as well as local Hyper-V Admin

Thoughts as to why I've been able to successfully create 5 VMs on this server and even imported one of those 5 before and now I'm not?

Thanks...

60GB winevt directory!?! Need to setup syslog server

Our DC's are getting a little out of control on the event logging. My supervisor would like to keep all logs, forever. So I suppose that means we need a syslog server. The most recommended seems to be http://www.kiwisyslog.com/products/kiwi-syslog-server/product-overview.aspx. Anyone have any other recommendations?

On a related note - here is our DC policy. I'm not sure if this is just the default or what. Any recommendations on these settings?

eFax to File Server?

Hello!

I've been trying to research setting up our eFax account to send all incoming faxes from one specific # to a public folder on a virtual Windows file server (2k8). I have been unsuccessful in doing so and I'm wondering if this is even possible without setting up an actual fax line and going the ol' fashion route.

We had this set up at my old company (not sure how), but it was configured with an actual fax line to send all documents received via fax to a public folder on a file server. Halpz?

Cannot save password for remote desktop

I keep getting this error message when trying to remote desktop into our terminal server. I am just setting up this domain environment so this is the only pc I have set up on the domain. Was going to start with this pc, test everything. Then go to the next pc. This issue has stopped me in my tracks, as I do not want users to have to put in their passwords over and over just to log into our TS. I have tried the suggestion below on the local pc, the terminal server, and the domain server. That didnt work... So I am not sure I did it 100% correct, or if this is even the resolution to my issue.

Here is the link I tried to use to fix my issue. - http://itowns.blogspot.com/2009/01/remote-desktop-not-allowed-to-use-saved.html

Windows 2012 Enterprise and KMS through Microsoft Partnership

$

We recently became a Microsoft Certified Partner. One of the benefits of this partnership is getting Windows Server 2012 Enterprise installs. The issue I am running into is that after installation the OS isn't activating. When I try to activate it says:

The Software Licensing Service reported that the product could not be activated. no Key Management Service (KMS) could be contacted. Please see the Application Event Log for additional information.

We looked to see if Microsoft provided a KMS Host key but it does seem like they did. It seems odd that they would provide the software but not the means to activate it. Have any of you other Microsoft Certified Partners run into this situation?

a remote DC sever has been down for over 1 month. Now we fixed it. the domain is behind. I do not see new changes being applied to the DC sever. As there a way to force it to sync up. Is there a way to see if its fully functional? anything I need to do to make sure everything is working? Currently right now when I turn this DC on on the remote site. the remote workstation are having issues validing sayin trust relationship is not trusted or something. Do I just leave it on until it sync up? Please advise on what to do.

thanks

Server 2012 R2/Windows 8.1 Preview keyboard layout issue

$

I know it's still in preview, but I've noticed that even though I set up an alternate keyboard during install on either of their Blue preview builds, it will only let me use Qwerty for the logon screen. It switches to my selected layout after logging in, but I was wondering if anyone else had noticed this (I'm not finding any mention of it on Google...).

Anyone think this little "feature" will be fixed? Anyone know of a workaround?

Windows Server 2012 wants to Initialize already initialized volume

$

I have a Dell R710 with 2 VDs (a RAID1, and a RAID5)

The RAID1 volume has Server 2012 installed. the RAID5 volume is used for storage, it is initialized as an MBR volume.

I had to format and reinstall Server 2012 on the RAID1 volume, everything went fine. But now after reinstalling Windows, it wants to initialize and format the RAID5 volume. Why???? Is this normal. Is the partition information for additional volumes now stored on the OS disc with Server 2012?

Windows Server Backup Delete

$

Hi. I have a Windows Server SBS 2008 Server Backups setup and they have run out of space, but the program isn't deleting the old backups. I have tried running the disk shadow and wbadmin commands but cannot seem to delete the old backups to make space. there are no shadow copies to be deleted or system state backups, the message coming up was saying there are only full backups, but I cant seem to delete them. when I go into disk management the backup disk is showing but it doesn't have a drive letter assigned to it. I don't want to run the delete catalog command as I don't want to wipe all history of backups and start again. I cant see anywhere to set it to auto delete old backups. there is definitely enough space on the hard drives to cover my server but if the old backups don't go away, it wont happen. im not sure if im typing the commands right or wrong
