DFS-R Targets | Supported OS Versions ?

Just a quick sanity check here, folks :)

I'm working within a network that has multiple sites, connected with weaker WAN links. I'm trying to get distributed MDT Deployment Shares at each of these locations, to minimize the WAN link usage for imaging.
Several guides talk about using DFS-R for replication of the deployment share; however, this environment has a mandate to keep all "Server" level OS machines in a centralized location (So no Server 2008 R2 at each site for me).

Can DFS-R of Server 2008 R2 (or 2012 R2?) be used to replicate towards another UNC Share path hosted by a normal Windows 7 Pro workstation PC? Using Win7Pro for a Linked Deployment Share is allowable by MDT, but I'm pretty sure that method doesn't use RDC for minimizing data transferred.
The distributed shares can be Read-Only, if that plays into the equation. Also note that DFS-Namespaces wouldn't be used; I'm trying to get the RDC feature of DFS-R to minimize WAN link usage.

Thanks in advance for the help!
