Windows Update Server using a Synology NAS

I'm looking at possibilities for setting up WSUS, or at least a WSUS equivalent, on our remote site locations that do not have a server. WSUS is what we use at the main office and locations that run a server. For our non-server locations, there is no budget for setting up a servers there, much less licensing for further copies of Server 2008 or 2012, but they all have NAS devices on site. Has anyone ever configured their NAS as a Windows update server?

I've heard rumors of setting up a Windows 7 machine to run WSUS, but haven't had any luck getting that to work (I know, WSUS is not supposed to run on Windows 7, but figured it was worth a shot). So, what are your thoughts? What have you tried? What worked and what didn't?
