Connection Dies During Server 2008 R2 Backup

We just discovered that we cannot access either of our Windows 2008 R2 Servers when one is performing a backup. We'll say the server doing the backup is called Server1 and the other is called Server2. Server2 does not perform regular backups (yet). We have no other servers performing DNS, DHCP, AD DS, etc other than these two.

Problem Details

  • Cannot ping either server a minute or two after back starts
  • All clients lose connection to both servers for a few minutes (no DNS)
  • VNC freezes on Server1 when backup begins
  • No error logs, backup is successful

Backup Details

  • Bare metal recovery, system state, system reserved, local disk C:
  • VSS Full Backup
  • Backs up to a SAN, which is connected via a separate NIC on a separate network segment (so shouldn't be saturation)

Server1 Details

  • RID, PDC, and Infrastructure Master
  • Domain Naming Master, Schema Master
  • Because of secondary NIC connection to SAN (on another network segment), multihomed (working to change though)
  • DHCP, Certificate, DNS, AD DS Server
  • GC

Server2 Details

  • Primary DNS for clients
  • DNS and AD DS Server
  • NOT connected to the SAN and secondary NIC disabled
  • GC

Does anyone have any ideas why the backup will temporarily cause network issues with these servers?

Thanks!
