First Server - Trying to figure out what OS is required

Hi,

Newbie checking in. I've been tasked with pricing up a new server for a small office in the York Brewery we own. It is only required to host a very simple piece of software called Brewman, based on MS Access, which allows us to manage our brewery tasks.

I've tried hosting it on our MS Server 2003 server at our main site, however we're having a lot of trouble getting a label printer (an Intermec) to work over Terminal Services.

So I was thinking something like a DELL PowerEdge™ T110 II. The question is what operating system and how many licenses.

I understand MS SBS 2008 provides five free licenses, which would actually be sufficient. It would give us a lot of unrequired features like Exchange and File Server. That's no bad thing but it would mean we would need 16GB RAM and as far as I can tell server RAM isn't cheap.

The other option is MS Server 2008 (would I require R2?) and from what I understand you have to buy the user licenses separately.

(Having said that, this MS Server 2008 RS says it has 5 Client Access Licenses...http://www.ebuyer.com/261041-windows-server-standard-2008-r2-w-sp1-x64-english-1pk-dsp-oem-dvd-p73-05128)

We have a warehouse in a different location on a different network that would need to remote login and use the software. I understand the best way to go about that would be to purchase Windows Server 2008 Terminal Services (the least number of licenses I can see is 5). Its been suggested to me that this should be installed on a PC in the office and that outside users remote login to this PC and in turn to the server (so that they don't have direct access to the server). Though I don't really see why this is the case if you restrict the privileges of their account.

Sorry that's a lot of questions. All general advice appreciated. I've never done anything like this before!!

Please note they currently just work off a workgroup and do almost all tasks by remote logging into the server here in Lancaster.

Thanks!

Matt
