replace failed domain controller with new server same name not DC

On a time crunch here... I had a DC fail on me this week.  I have many other DCs in the domain.  the old server held a number of shares (user files and general files) and did print services for a site.  I've created new VMs for print services and a new server for User shares.  The main file shares were restored to a temp server, on site, that must be removed for another project (reason for time crunch).  A new server is arriving today.

What I would like to do, since there are a lot of references to the old server on Users' computers (shortcuts, mapped drives, linked files, etc) is to create a new server to host the original file shares.  I would like this server to have the same name as the original server, but I don't need it to be a domain controller.

Is this possible?  Would I be able to force the Active Directory to remove the server from it's meta data if a new, non-DC, server is up with the same name?

Like I said, domain-wide, I have 6 other DCs.  At this site, I have a working DC.

Would it be better (or even possible) to go ahead and set up the new server with same name/IP and add the DS role (dcpromo it)? Will it cause issues because it's a new machine (VM or other)?

Opinions? Advice?  Anything is appreciated!
