Migration issues and failure

Hello, I am new to this forum and I don't usually post questions but a friend recommended this site and I thought I'd seek help here.

For a bit of background info to help you understand: I am an Information Systems major who hasn't had any experience with servers whatsoever. I am got hired as a part-time computer technician for a small business place with around 15-30 computers and 1 server. The first project given to me was migrating an old SBS 2003 server to a new Server 2012 server.

I've started out the migration process and everything until I got up to the point where the software that needed to be installed is incompatible with the OS I have which is Server 2012 essentials.

I ran dcpromo on the new server which was successful. I also accidentally ran dcpromo on the old server, which failed. I've had to seize the FSMO roles towards the old server because they wouldn't do a safe transfer. I'm back to having the old server as a the only DC now. I've reformatted the HD on the new server and installed 2012 Standard on it but whenever I try to bind the server to the domain, it keeps giving the error "DNS name does not exist." I've already pointed the DNS configuration to the right one.

Now, a test computer that was previously bound to the old server, I've unbound and tried to bind but it failed. It won't bind again.

I tried to the create a whole new domain in the new server and followed the steps from various websites but I still haven't been able to bind the test computer to the new domain. I may have missed something in the creation of new server domain.

Now I don't know what to do because I'm new to servers. Is there anyone who can help me with this dilemma or possibly letting me know what my situation is?

Thank you very much.
