Need advice on a second domain controller.

I have very little experience with network configurations (as in none). We are a very small company, we have around 15 users logged on at one time.

We are in the process of getting new servers to replace our aging outdated servers, and going from Server 2003 to server 2012.

I have read that having a 2nd domain controller, although not needed, is strongly recommended.

Currently we have our 2nd DC running on our MX server. We would like to continue to run with a 2nd DC, but we are are trying to decide on the best path to take.

1. Although not recommended, should we put our 2nd DC back on our exchange server?

2. Go without a 2nd DC?

3. Would it be feasible or even possible to keep our Old DC in the mix as our 2nd? This box has a Pentium 4 3.2 GHz with 3 GB of Ram. I am assuming in order to do this we would have to install at minimum Server 2008 R2, and 2012 if we can.

Please comment.
