I am just now finalizing the setup of our new WS2012 and I am very displeased with my backup times and was hoping someone could help me shine a light on what is going on. I am doing two different types of backups for simplicity let's look at the "easy" one first. I am using Windows Server Backup to do a simple backup from our file server, it is currently 2.88TB of data. This is a simple backup and ONLY does the one drive with the network drives and homes. Right now the backup has been running for 36.5 hours and is stuck at 12% of compacting virtual hard drives. This is obscene! I could have easily just setup an rsync and it would have been finished in a couple hours as this is going to a USB3.0 drive that I get 133MB/sec from. This USB drive is dedicated solely for this backup so that I can rotate and take offsite so nothing else is trying to access it. The only twist I can think of is I am passing this USB drive through Hyper-V to the VM (the file server is a VM under a WS2012 hypervisor) and the file server drive (9TB RAID10) is also attached via Hyper-V. However, like I said, this drive is very fast copying files normally. Oh and yes this is doing a full backup and I have it configured to perform incrementals afterwards.
Has anyone else noticed this / what am I doing wrong here?
